Crappy weather Sasturday random question...

tankardtankard Posts: 7,030 Admiral
Did your parents let you drive before you were old enough for a license?

Mine did, all of us....4 boys...well 3 because one of our siblings inexplicably has never had the desire to drive anything.

We never got in trouble, but I think these days it would be a different story.

They let you drive on public roads?

We lived on a dirt road and I remember driving the car to the end of the road and back before I was old enough to get a license, but never on a public highway.

I would stand in the seat and steer the car while my mother would operate the clutch, gear shift, brake, and accelerator pedal.

I was four years old at the time. She was learning to drive at the same time I was.

It was a very lonely dirt road on which we lived. Had grass in the middle.

    I still like to drive.

Yes, used to run down to the store for groceries etc. Got stopped because my 'rents hadn't paid their annual road tax sticker which is displayed on the windshield. Police spotted that and pulled me over.

Lost my learners permit for a year and fined five pounds!. No ticket on the road tax.

    Around 1974/75.

No, not before. But my dad thought driving was a rite of passage. He took all 5 of us to the DVM on or about our 15th birthday for a learners permit and on or about our 16th birthday for our driver's license.

My twin sisters, 10 years younger than me, are the only ones who gave him headaches over broke down cars and wrecks.
  • Nope , Parents never taught me how to drive.
But every time they'd leave town I'd steal Moms car.68 Cougar....winning...:grin

We all had to learn to drive stick. Not allowed to have a car at college until, you were a Junior and my dad didn't care who bought the car.

I let me 13 year old drive the alley behind my house. After 5, 10... 15 trips there was a knock on the door. 5 cop cars from every angle of the alley and main road. One of the neighbors reported a juvenile driving a jeep (our Willys) in the alley. :banghead

We all learned to drive stick shift too. Three speed on the column. It was my dad's preference as well. And I STILL drive stick shift today.

Yep. At age 14 hauled eggs from 2 different locations to the grading house. Would drive there, pick up eggs, load in old 50 something ford truck and haul back.

I started "driving" when I was 11 years old. I was raised on a farm with a lot of land, and the vehicle was a '71 F100 with 3-speed on the column. I stayed on the dirt then. Didn't go on the paved roads until I was 12. Motorcycle license when I was 14. Started my kids driving on the highway when they were 14. I figured they could use the head start for drivers ed. We live in a sparsely populated area.

Yes on the public roads, and I grew up in Orlando.

My mom, who grew up in Gainesville, would drive at age 11 to the store, etc.

So I guess she never thought it was a big deal. Although we were about 14 when they would let us drive.

Very different times now, they'd probably get in a ton of trouble if we got caught. But we never did.

I got my first car before I got my license. started driving at 15 and pretty much all over town. I had a job and also drove to school, this is back in 85. All over Miami. My son, now 14 already has a car that his uncle gave him, he will get his permit when he turns 15. I can't say no as I drove around his age. But times are not the same, I would probably end up in jail for letting him drive these days.
