Rifle laser collimator - your thought

BallaCoiPersiciBallaCoiPersici Posts: 8,384 Admiral
Here isn't easy tune up the rifles sights because most shooting ranges don't allow caliber over .22 LR :rolleyes and shooting continuously with a big calibers in the countryside is like asking for an arrest.

Have you ever tried the cartridge laser collimator ?

I'm asking because many say that are valueless items because are never properly aligned with the barrel.

Your opinion?

I've used them n my pistols. Don't know how well they would work on a rifle.

It'll get you close (3" give or take) at 25-50 yards for rifle and 15 for pistol. It doesn't allow for drop, it simply puts you in the general area the bore is pointed. From there you have to adjust the sites or scope to fine tune, with the round you plan on using

Ok, if I understood correctly could be good for buckshoots but not for rifle bullets.
    Thanks a lot...

Ballak, are you guys permitted the use of suppressors ("silencers")?

I know alot of northern European countries allow them, not sure about Italy.
  • BallaCoiPersiciBallaCoiPersici Posts: 8,384 Admiral
No, suppressors are banned in Italy, it's a felony even the possession not only the use. But yes, you're right: are allowed in almost the whole Europe. For instance in Switzerland (15 miles from my place) are allowed.

Could be a solution. But what about the supersonic bang of the bullet :huh ? At wich distance from the muzzle it occurs ?

Laser bore sighters are used to get you on paper then sight in from there. Is your rifle a bolt action? If so remove the bolt and look through the barrel and sight in that way. You can also shoot a laser pointer down the bar r el

    Good question Balla...

I can't say for sure because it would be somewhat different for each caliber and speed...BUT.....should you attempt to mark someone using a suppressor it is tough to do.

The suppressor will work two fold...one...it will act as a muzzle brake and it will muffle a lot of the noise.

You could just move here...we love shooting like it's WWII......:)

No, it's a semiauto rifle (Benelli Argo E)

Supersonic is only a Crack like a bull whip. That's not a concern at all.

Do you have a rifle rest that's very solid? If so lock it down, aim and shoot at the 10x at 25 yards. You're not going to hit dead center so no worries . Now lock it back down in the rest and aim your scope at the exact same spot you initially aimed at. Hold the rifle down and adjust your scope to your bullet hole. Shoot another to confirm placement. Two shots and you'll be very close. Move to 50 and repeat. Then to 100.

Remember that a 1 moa scope will require 16clicks/inch adjustments at 25 yards

Thanks but I don't need a scope tuning, I just would check the metal sights accuracy (I suspect they aim little up and the rifle shots little low).
My problem is that the only shooting range pretty closer to my place where I can shoot with this caliber (30-06) is open in summer only (and shooting in the rural area is forbidden here).

Next time I'll go hunt I'll spend some minutes to check my sights. Some bangs at the end of a boar game wouldn't be a big problem :wink

Heck, I usually shoot once at 25, then get back on target and adjust. The 2nd shot is usually dead on, or within a 1/2 inch or less. Adjust again, and done at 25. Then back out to 100.
That's if you're on paper the first shot, sometimes you have to get pretty close to the target just to see where it's hitting.

What you said is absolutely not true at all....

The larger something is the larger the area that is opened up and collapses...creating the noise.

There was a assassination weapon and round built that fired a tungsten sabot projectile that had little to no (crack) sound signature that broke the sound barrier....and then you have the "sonic boom" created by a jet aircraft that shook building and broke windows because of it's size...

Both were going about the same speed....
  • BallaCoiPersiciBallaCoiPersici Posts: 8,384 Admiral
As I know the sonic boom continues until the bullet keeps the supersonic speed and the people who are close to the bullet in the moment of the bullet transit can hear it.
What I don't exactly know is how long a 30-60 bullet keeps the supersonic speed. Probably it becames subsonic not before to 300/400 yards considering the speed at the muzzle (2500 up to 3000 ft/s).

All rifles have 2 "zeros". One at the rise and one at the fall. The longer the distance the more pronounced the difference is. A 223 (fancy .22) will zero at 50 and again near 200.

    Ballak, Just curious,

Are you allowed to cross the border with your hunting rifle in Europe? I would imagine Switzerland has some pretty good rifle ranges??
  • BallaCoiPersiciBallaCoiPersici Posts: 8,384 Admiral
I should ask for a paper (a licence) for moving firearms outside the borders.
Not impossible but the bureaucracy here is very boring...

    Anyway good suggestion thanks :wink.
I'll ask to some Swiss friends if they could give me some informations about this.
    Could be the easiest solution...

Very cool. I thought of it when I re-read your post about You living 15 miles from the Swiss Border. I know Switzerland is a rather Pro-Gun country, they must have some good rifle ranges.

Besides with your border crossing permit, you'll be able to explain to your wife that now you need to go on a Chamois hunt in France. :)

It's true. Not sure if still legal now but until 10/15 years ago they could own also automatic guns.
For sure any guy under military service bring to home the assault rifle between the camps (they spend some days each year for the service).

What wasn't true? I guess for the hundreds of times I was in a range pit I was hearing things. Maybe the competitors weren't using the super bullet you were referring to.

    John....

When you wrote ...."Supersonic is only a Crack like a bull whip. That's not a concern at all. " you made a "one sixe fits all " statement that is simply not true.

The volume of sonic pressure wave is determined by size, speed and shape. A object breaking the speed of sound and you do get a crack.....but the same object going much faster creates a greater pressure wave and there for a much louder sound.

If you replace the "cracker" at the end of a bullwhip with a piece of thread there is still a sonic crack...but isn't very noticeable at all.

My point is that no two would be the same unless they had equal characters...... not to make you mad.....
