He was a "present" of sorts as we didn't pick him as much as he picked us.
We went on vacation and out female sweetheart of a golden retriever dog was **** by some monster and them out came one coal black giant puppy some time later that the kids had to have.
Many is the person who's dog's personality typifies what the owner wishes what his could be.
As for me....mine is now that of one of those fainting goats and if I had to guess......I believe that the "Turner River Terror" would be a crotchless thong stealing (used of course) Chinese Hairless wearing rubber boots.
My best friend is watching his sons pit bull while moving. I admit I am not a fan of aggressive dog breeds. Anyhoo, I go to his house. Dog is wagging his tail and seems happy to see me. I can't say the same and ignore him. Couple minutes later he can't take his eyes off me and starts growling. I told my buddy get that effing out of here I told you so. He said it was because I ignored the dog and it thought I was up to something. ****? I don't want to cater to a dog's thought process. None of my dogs acted like that. So is it true they smell your fear and attack?
sounds like it is more of a "you" problem than a breed problem
I've read of many attacks and mauling over the years.... never read about a pointer, retriever, lab, golden, poodle, dachshund, spaniel, and other docile canine pets attacking or mauling people, especially children. The only two dogs I've ever read that attacked or mauled people are pit bulls and rottweilers.
So again, what useful purpose does that dog serve?
The difference between a pit biting someone and a lab/daschund, etc... is when a pit bites you he wants to eat your face off along with all of your dead relatives...
That GSD mentioned above that bit two friends' arms as they walked away... a pit would have ripped off their arms and beat them with it.
Never had an incident with one of those. They'd yap and yap and go run behind something. I was told several times "he won't bite" about mid sized mixed breed dogs as they were circling around trying to get behind me. One got me in the ankle, but I had boots on, he turned before i could get him with the mag light on the skull. Looked dead at the owner who had just said it wouldn't bite....We're done here.
The happy go lucky dogs don't care that you're even there. the ones you have to watch for keep barking and pacing, they never take their eyes off you. I had this one dog, i forget his name, but it was up in the villages, everyone who did service work on that house came to see that dog, pool guys, ac guys, lawn guys, that pooch was famous. He'd walk with me while I would do my inspections around the house, coolest dog I ever met. Just very chilled out.
But I have alienated a few family members because they have felt in the past that an invitation for them to come over and party is also an invitation for them to bring 2 pit bulls and a boxer with them.
When I say something about these beasts I got...."They have never bitten anyone"......as if that should somehow comfort my worry that they may drag off someone's 2 year old and feast on them.
And when I told them that the dogs had to go...they said that if they had to take the dogs away that they wouldn't be coming back......and with that I offered them something to take with them.....:)
Another idiot on the brides side comes equipped with his own high capacity smoke wagon which ...though concealed....sticks out like a sore thumb under his shirt...AND...he likes to drink like he is going to the gallows in an hour or so.......I just tell him that I will lock his weapon up until he's ready to go...which he wants to argue with me about.....hahahahaha...:)
...oh....he also has a pit bull, but leaves it at home as he says he doesn't trust it around people it doesn't know.....MY GOD.....

Aren't you the one who had someone drive down to spend a weekend fishing, but brought the whole Griswold Family Truckster down with them full of brats? You have some stories sir.
They say that if you live long enough you get to see it all....
I enjoy people and am pretty easy going which has sometimes been to my detriment .....but it all seems to work out in the end.
People confuse kindness with blindness. I've thrown family members out of the house on Christmas eve for acting a fool. And in the same breath literally welcomed good friends into my home with a "Hey Johnny, come on in man, great to see you!!!!" then proceeded to do shots of Ballentine's scotch until he puked.
Just had my first pit bull incident last week on walk with my Aussie Cody. I will preface this by saying Cody has played with many pits at dog parks without incident. As we walked around the corner , I saw two people with two pit bulls. Only problem was that I noticed a woman on top of one of them. Not sure what the issue was but I decided to go back where we came. My mistake was I turned my back as we walked away and one of the pits was all over Cody who still on leash with me. ( assuming it was the one under the woman.) Cody not being a fighter rolled to his back ( saw later that the pit drew blood with a bite to his back).
I'm trying to get a hold of the pit, but he just about has Cody by his throat-- fortunately Cody's thick leather collar is helping slightly. As the pit tried another bite, I was able to pull him off Cody. I tried to give him over to his owner, who lost his grip and he's back on Cody again. I yelled something like, " get your dog or I'm going to kill him." Not my proudest moment for sure. But it looked bleak. Out of frustration, I hit the dog as hard as I could on his nose, he let go, and I pulled him off, and finally the owner got control of him. We left and went home. Cody had a bloody back ( one bite) which I cleaned off with Vetrycin.
Saw the owner the next day (w/o Cody). He apologized said he had gotten a new collar/harness and leash. Said his dog had all his shots, blah blah. He said the collar had just came off just as we arrived.
Found out they lived 100 yards from me ( in another neighborhood) separated by a greenbelt. Crap. Also found out later that a week earlier the pit bull that went after us actually went under and thru a fence to go after a neighbor's dog. If I had known that, I might have called animal control, but after I met the guy, I didn't tell him I was going to call animal control. But I told him I expected him to control his dogs and if he sees us coming, to go elsewhere( or we will.) I told him I was concerned about the consequences if my 3 and 5 year old grandkids had been with me.
I will say that the pit had plenty of chances to bite me and he didn't, so there's that. But this happened in literally 20 seconds, and I will never allow myself to turn my back with another alpha dog in our vicinity. Looking back, during that moment of frustration, I had reached for my kershaw pocket knife that is ALWAYS in my right pocket, but fortunately in this case and my state of mind( fear for Cody's life), it wasn't there. Because I didn't want to hurt the dog. Thank God the punch worked.
All I know was that 20 seconds was a blur.
Dogs in general will deter criminals, it doesn't matter what breed as long as they bark. Most criminals aren't afraid of being attacked, they are afraid of being found out.
Funny how German Sheppards don't get a bad rap. They are just as easily trained to attack.
That's my next dog by the way. Fiercely protective, easy to train, brilliant and overly affectionate.
Do yourself and get a "good" one. I'm talking reputable breeder. I would advise against an 'Americanized' line. Something more European. It will be a far healthier and more correct dog bred to the original concept. Not one of those that can barely walk.
The early bird may get the worm, but the Second Mouse gets the cheese. SW
I didn't say other breeds don't attack children. I said I've never read of any others. There are always exceptions to everything.
My current dog was mauled by a PB when he was six months old. I don't blame the dog as much as the 'handler'. Many people who buy these type of dogs are insecure and that rubs off on the dog regardless of breed.
The early bird may get the worm, but the Second Mouse gets the cheese. SW
All of the major service companies these days like Direct TV, etc tell you up front if you have ANY dogs please put them up before the tech arrives. Think I'll start that rule myself. For some reason customers love their dogs jumping all over me when I arrive for a estimate.
Last customer raised attack guard dogs. They were in pens all around me going ape chit. Then she took me in the house where three or four more were. She said do you mind the dogs, I said yes I hate them. No I didn't get the job.
1) Dogs MOST definitely smell fear... Well what they smell is adrenaline. And it is a VERY strong odor to dogs.... The problem is.... Most species including us.... Produce adrenaline for TWO reasons... FEAR and Aggression... That presents a problem for the dog... Are you afraid? or are you being aggressive?
An example of the adrenaline odor thing.... There is a crime in a neighborhood.... People have been all over.... The bad guy knows the police are after him.... So he ran..... The K9 unit shows up.... Jumps on the bad guys scent.... Goes through all the other human scent and never waivers.... The dog is following the adrenaline odor.
2) Dogs are MASTERS of body language.... Most of their communication with each other and with us is body language.... Most of us pay little attention to it.... But dogs do... And they know people farther than we know them or even each other... We have busy lives.... Lots of distractions... Dogs... We are the center of their world... They watch us day and night.
Those are the two things.... And people that are afraid of dogs.... Or afraid of a particular dog.... Most often get a negative reaction from dogs... Or a specific dog they are afraid of. Because they send out signals that make the dog feel threatened....
People that are not afraid of dogs... And people that have NO COMMON sense... Like me... That are not afraid of dogs they should be... Usually get a positive response out of dogs... even dogs that they SHOULD be afraid of...
Specific to your situation... You friend was RIGHT....
a) Dog is wagging his tail and seems happy to see me. - the dog greeted you in a friendly and welcoming manner.....
b) I can't say the same and ignore him. - I was not there... But there is a HUGE difference between ignoring and avoiding... You have stated you do not trust the breed... Chances are great you were avoiding... A dog will read that EVERY time....
c)Couple minutes later he can't take his eyes off me and starts growling. - you fail to trust... Have concern... Whether you think it or not...chances are good your body was dumping adrenaline because you expected the dog to do something... The fact that you knew the dog could not keep his eyes off of you, shows clearly that you were avoiding rather than ignoring... If you were ignoring, you would not have known the dog could not keep his eyes off of you.... And the reason the dog could not keep his eyes off of you is that you were showing him some very bad warnings... you were a threat.. to him and the person caring for him.
d) and starts growling - people get WAY WAY too worked up about growling.... Growling in communication... Happy dogs growl, scared dogs growl... Concerned dogs growl..... Here is the thing.... IF a dog WANTS to hurt you... Wants to attack you... WANTS to bite you... it has zero need to growl.... It may... But MOST often they do not... It is just going to do what it wants to do... In the situation you described.... The growl was a warning.... "hey back off..." "I do not trust you.... " And you gave the dog reason to believe that.. You were watching him... He smelled how you felt.....
e)I told my buddy get that effing out of here I told you so. - this just strengthens the dog's assessment of the situation... Your buddy may not own the dog... But he has a relationship with the dog..... The dog did not understand you words... But he understood your body language, tone of voice, etc... you confirmed the dog's assessment of you.
I am NOT saying this to be mean..... In the least....... My dogs are NOT pit bulls.... But two of the three dogs I have here in the house, I would have had to intervene at a significant level to ensure your safety..... And one of the dogs I am talking about has had at least a thousand people pet him and show him affection in a single day.... Multiple times.. You are up against it with this dog..... But all it not lost.... Quit paying attention to breed... And look at the dog..... NOT the breed..... Dogs are far far more honest than humans can ever hope to be.... And this dog greeted you well.... "Dog is wagging his tail and seems happy to see me." He did good... You... Not so much... Had this dogs been a Labrador, we would not be having this conversation... Simply because of your pre conceived notions....
Or....maybe it's just an effed up breed that can't be trusted.
I watched the news the other morning and I don't remember the particulars but they had a group there with maybe 10 pit bulls dressed up in T shirts and a bunch of little kids petting every one of them and sticking their faces near the dogs faces. It literally made me sick worrying that I was getting ready to witness something horrific.
"Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need. Amen."
As you know Pit Bulls were bred up to be aggressive fighting dogs in mind and body, hence "pit bull". Sooner or later most every pit bull will snap for some reason and be vicious or worse attack. All the stupid pit bull owners say it, my pit bull is nice and would never attack anyone but then the pit bull eventually attacks because that what it was bred to do, fight. Anyone who trusts a pit bull is a fool.

Fauci's "Gain of Function" is newspeak for enhancing the contagiousness of a virus for use as a biological weapon in war. Some guys like "Johnny Bandit" are a rare breed and can get along with dogs in a way that most of us can't comprehend.....and where as he's right for him.....he may be wrong for many of us.
I am not a "dog whisperer" and have had to shoot a few dogs in my day as they were torqueing up for a kill.
Now there may be some who might say that I shouldn't have given them a case of "lead poisoning" until the actually did damage a human.....and with that I most whole heartedly disagree.
Should some "AH" pull out a knife or a gun and start screaming at the top of his lungs and running at me I would dump that human as fast as I would dump the dog.
I believe that it all has to do with the perceived threat level that makes us do what we have to do.
Just close the this dumb thread. Non productive. I mean really, johnny misterjr and schmidy all in the same thread is not conducive to FS PROTOCOL. Jk. Hell might as well get gary in here.

Never had to put a dog down for being aggressive. When I was about 12 or so, we did have a chow mix that my dad gave to a farmer due to his aggressive nature and the farmer wanted a dog to keep people and animals away from his crops. My dad was concerned about him biting us kids or a neighbors due to his attitude.
