Back surgery

HambweldHambweld Posts: 218 Deckhand
Guys after 6 months off the water and being stuck in my house for the past 2 weeks I've decided it's time. I've seen 8 surgeons from Texas, Jacksonville, Charlotte, and Atlanta. Doc at Emory told me to live with it and keep taking oxycodone.😡 Long story short I have to raise up some $ so I can get 2 disk replaced. Please share the linc. Thanks for your help.

Ive had the L5 S1 replaced and fused and all i can say is make sure you have your weight down as low as you can and be ready for a rough road to recovery! I will say that you will think after a month that you can do more than you can...and you can get yourself into a world of hurt. Take it easy and and I hope you are able to get this done because i can tell you I lived with that pain for 10yrs before i finally got mine done and I have been without back pain for 8years now and hope yours does as well

Doctor in Germany told me to start losing weight. That's pretty hard when you cant walk to the mailbox and back. I've gained 35# since I hurt my back. Didn't realize I burned that many calories working. Had a long conversation with a guy who had the same surgery. The new implants are miles ahead of the older ones. He told me not to overdue it. I'm pretty sure my wife won't let me. Now I just need the $$

I do a lot of the structural drawing for the city of Albany. Currently we're doing Thornton & Henderson gyms & the Christmas tree holder at the government center. We talked to the people at the Rockefeller Center in NY & copied theirs. It's only for a 40 ft. tree instead of a 100. You guys got Thornton, Ditty got the Christmas tree deal.

Out of curiosity have you tried the Bonati Institute or Laser Spine Institute? Both are here in Fl near Tampa and all they do is back and spine work, when I had to have back surgery I went to Bonati and they fixed me up and I have sent several other people and they had the same results, if you haven't checked into them it might be worth a look. Good luck.

I did the boca back institute some 20 years ago . I was ready to put a bullet in my head after years of pain . Good luck with it I was up and ready to leave the next morning after my surgery . Never took a pain killer. Amazing how much better ya feel when they take a piece of a disk out of the nerve 😎

I had surgery at the one in Cleveland ... first rate on every level.

It wasn't back surgery. Some ENT stuff.

Good luck and hope you are well soon. My wife's been dealing with severe spine issues since 2004. First surgery was 2 fusions in her neck in 2006. About 2010 she started having issues with her lower back. I wouldn't want to wish these issues on anyone. Her lower back has just been getting worse. She's tried everything to not go the surgery route. She's lost 70lbs, has done core training, exercises in the pool, chiropractor, massage, etc...She gets severe pain and her right leg will just go dead frequently throughout the day. She went to a surgeon over at Jewitt in Winter Park Florida. She's only 38. When we 1st walked in to the surgeons office 3 months ago, he looked at my wife and asked if he had the right patient. He expected to see a woman in her late 70s who was in a horrific accident due to how bad my wife's MRI films were showing. She has a severe case of degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, and osteoarthritis. She is having a spinal fusion on L4-L5 and L-5-S1 tomorrow morning. We are all praying that this will do the trick. It's been hell on our family, especially with having a 9yr old son. She'll be in the hospital 3-5 days with a 4-6 month 100% recovery time. We have an excellent surgeon from Jewitt and feel we are in very good hands.

If anyone else has been through this surgery any recommendations or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Searunner, I sincerely hope all goes well for your family.

My only suggestion is to listen to some cool soothing music at night. That helped me a little during my recent stay in the hospital with extreme pain in my right thigh arising from a herniated disc pinching a nerve. By far the worst pain I've ever felt.

Bonati fixed my brothers back when no other surgeon would touch it. He was awake for every surgery and walked home after every one of them as well.

Thank you Gardawg. She had the surgery on Wednesday (11/2) - Spinal fusion on L4-L5 and L5-S1. It has been a very tough couple of days. She's in excruciating pain. She nor I expected it to be this bad. When she had the fusions done in her neck in '06 that was ezpz compared to this lumbar spinal surgery. The Doctor said the surgery went very well. He said while during surgery they had a computer hooked up to her spinal cord and everything was monitored and reported great. He also said he could see all the nerves and everything was excellent when he stitched her incision up. Thursday morning the physical therapist had her up and walking with the assistance of a walker. Doctor said it's going to be a tough couple of weeks for recovery. Full recovery is 4-6 months. I sure hope she's able to be discharged tomorrow. Staying by her side in the hospital 24/7 has been a nightmare on me--very sleep deprived and the feeling of helplessness with seeing your loved one in so much pain. Once discharged the doctor has setup in-home healthcare for her for a couple of weeks. Prayers and well wishes for anyone going through this kind of stuff.

Physical therapy has helped a lot since being discharged. I only had steroid injections in the spine. The first month is rough. It's been three months now and things are starting to feel more normal and have some strength but not much stamina. Get some rest. And some good food. Best wishes.

If anyone ever is looking at getting a fusion, please do yourself a favor and look up onz or www.germandiscreplacement.com I saw myself and another guy from Canada that couldn't walk into the hospital and 4 days post op, we were walking up and down 5 floors of stairs!!! It's going to be March before I can get my boat wet again, but I can stand up straight and walk normal again!!!!!!

Exercise Vs. Diet: The Truth About Weight Loss

“As a rule of thumb, weight loss is generally 75 percent diet and 25 percent exercise. An analysis of more than 700 weight loss studies found that people see the biggest short-term results when they eat smart. On average, people who dieted without exercising for 15 weeks lost 23 pounds; the exercisers lost only six over about 21 weeks. It’s much easier to cut calories than to burn them off. For example, if you eat a fast-food steak quesadilla, which can pack 500-plus calories, you need to run more than four miles to ‘undo’ it!

“So, what should you eat? It’s true that low-carb diets tend to be the most popular because they offer the fastest results, but they can be difficult to sustain. I recommend striving for a more balanced plan that focuses on fruits and veggies, lean proteins and whole grain carbs. And never cut calories too low (this causes your metabolism to slow, and you can start losing muscle mass). For a healthy daily calorie count, allow 10 calories per pound of body weight — so a 150-pound woman should shoot for a 1,500-calorie target. That way, you should be able to lose weight no matter how much you exercise.”
