Planning a family trip to escape winter for 4 adults and 6 kids (ages of 9-15). The adults are 2 diehard fishermen and 2 diehard beachbums (sleep late/read a book by the pool). My wife would be happy at an all-inclusive with activities to keep the kids occupied, and I'd be happy on Christmas Island or some other deserted island covered up with DIY bonefish flats.
Have been looking at Mexico and thinking of renting a home for all 10 of us on the water with a pool about halfway between Cancun and Tulum so we could get to Ascension Bay for 2-3 days of fishing while having a nice place for the family with some activities nearby. I also like that airfare from Raleigh to Cancun looks to be around $350 pp instead of $600 to Costa Rica or $900 to Hawaii. And it looks like we can get a flats guide for $450 a day, which is much cheaper than I have paid in places like Turks and Caicos (~$900).
Any experiences in that area? Any other locations I should be considering in the Caribbean?

Thanks for the feedback. The cenotes and ruins look like great family activities. I will check out Belize as well.
