I am glad to only be a bird hunter with bird dogs...being a shooter or dog handler or whatever other niche exists to separate appears to generate far too much about which to worry.
The silence is pretty noticeable from this corner... "pretender" - pretty good handle.
The CCA is well worth supporting, wherever they are. I routinely donate charters for auction by local CCA chapters in more than one state.... and have for years.
When the sugar growers are run out of the glades they will be developed by the condo/apartment developers, you think it is polluted now, just wait till they start selling off the land to those guys. It will happen eventually but heck why not speed up the process.

I have to admit ignorance on the entire subject. From what I have gathered is half the people blame big sugar, the other half blames local residents and their associated lawn service. Any chance both are to blame?

Mister-Jr has the basics down. There is no one smoking gun to the extent of the issues as some would have you believe. It is a multifaceted issue where the finger pointing should stop.

In the discussion regarding algae blooms in the estuaries east and west of Lake Okeechobee, Septic tanks come up generally from people who want to change the direction of the conversation from the toxic discharges from the lake. Hundreds of billions of gallons of fresh water does far greater damage to our estuaries than any leakage from the thousands of septic systems.
If you need proof go to the St. Lucie inlet right now, it's clear clean green water. What's missing? The discharges. We still have the septic systems. As soon as the discharges stop the water clears, the grass is still dead and gone, but the water is clear.
Big Sugar is simply "Big" that's why most people blame Sugar for the discharges. Big Sugar is something like 2/3's of the entire EAA so they get the title.
As for the discharges coming from Sugar, you're right, water for the most part doesn't come from the south into our estuaries, BUT water that should be flowing south, thru land being farmed by Big Sugar, does come into our estuaries. By the Billions of gallons.
The rate of water flowing into the lake hasn't changed in decades. What changed the flow of water was the massive drainage of the Everglades which blocked the southern flow of water and sent it east and west.
It's a multifaceted issue, but CERP was designed to address those multiple facets. But if we gut CERP of it's southern storage component, we get a $20b+ boondoggle. Not only that, but progress reports on CERP are now determining that the original plan even underestimated the amount of storage needed. Here's a good recent article:

CCA stated in this video that they were responsible for "significant restrictions on longlines"
BS, as one who was on the ground floor of that fight and continued fighting for years, I never once saw anyone from CCA involved,
In fact the lawsuit which closed the straits to longlines was filed by Ken Hinnman formerly of NCMC nor president of Wild Oceans, not CCA.
Great job, Adam.

This should be good. Can't wait for the response.
