Tiller Motor Options-Which one?

Hello, recently moved to the West Coast not to long ago, and the kayak fishing has been great in the skinny water, but the wife would like to go out in a powered boat, so and I was thinking of a 15-16' Jon MVW with either a 20-25hp tiller motor/15" shaft but not sure what mfg to purchase.
Figured the boat would be good for some flats and fresh water fishing.

I have my first to last choices below (thinking about the first two mfg's as my main options), and keeping to the off brand so to speak to keep cost down.
I know the list might seem long, but I wanted to give a fair shot/decision on this.
A little incite and knowledge would help.
Please comment below if you would like.

Thanks a lot,

Take Mariner out. they are no more

Tohatsu, Nissan, and Merc are all made my Merc in the lower HP ranges

    Yamaha is always good

    Johnson is no more

Evinrude is now BRP and a good motor

they are all good. Buy what you can serviced locally and from a reputable dealer and you'll be fine

    good luck

I have a 1448 jon with a 20 hp Yamaha, the 15 and 20 are the exact same motor and are much smaller and lighter than the next size up which is the 25. It is a 4 stroke motor. This set up will run great with 2 people and with me runs just over 25 mph. I fish out of a kayak sometimes but find myself using this thing a lot more these days. I also have a big boat but again, this thing gets a lot more use. Motors today are all pretty good, I don’t think you could go wrong with any, I got the Yamaha cause I could get it at a good price but would have bought a mercury in a heart beat.

Thank you. I am picking up a Stump Nocker 14' tomorrow and the person is saying his 10hp gets him up to 20mph w/his buddy. I told him I would like a 20hp to power it but he said that is way to much and a 15 would work well.

Question, can one buy a 4 blade prop for these smaller motors (15-20hp) or do they only sell the three blade style?

Thanks, and thanks for the info. I also Yak and I'm liking the flat bottom of the Stump Nocker boat and it being fiberglass for the flats/West Coast.

Surfman-Where did you get this prop protector and does it affect trimming out the boat?
The motor I will buy will have a PT&Tilt.
Wondering if this would affect that to trim it out in skinny H20?

Nice pics of the rebuild BTW.

Just happened to see this. I have this on a boat I use in a rocky Maine river. It's called a rock hopper. I got it from Cabelas. Not sure if they still sell it. I have this on a 15 hp Merc 2 stroke on a 21 foot Scott Canoe that I use smallie fishing on the Penobscot River. It's full of boulder fields and I go place where jet boats don't dare go. Highly recommend this item. Best of luck to you
    here is the company: http://www.rockhoppermotorguard.com

made in USA great product. You will love it.

    Can someone answer me this?

Looking at the Yamaha 15hp and their spec sheet, the 15/20hp the bore/stroke are the same as well as the gear ratio.

Why then can't one buy a 15 and bump it up to a 20?

Is the computer controlled module making or setting the HP of these two motors, or is it the carb jetting?

Can one buy a 20 module and thus have a 20HP motor?

Am I missing something cause everything seems the same as far as specs go.

    Specs for both 15/20: http://yamahaoutboards.com/outboards/Portable/specifications

    Displacement 22.1 ci (362 cc)
    Bore x Stroke 63 x 58.1mm (2.48 x 2.29 in)
    Prop Shaft Horsepower 15hp @ 5500rpm
    Compression Ratio 9.3:1
    Intake Carburetor
    Ignition CDI Micro Computer
    Spark Plug DPR6EB-900-000
    Alternator Output 10A **
    Gear Ratio (27:13) 2.08:1

Here is the link to their module: http://yamahaoutboards.com/outboards/Portable/benefits

    Thanks,
    Jim
