FPI quick trip

Had the opportunity to load up the boat yesterday after work to try to catch a snook. Took the father-in-law out, a guy from England and a guy from North Dakota out.

Unfortunately, it looks like we are approaching the end of the mullet run up here in FP. There were good numbers of mullet in the area but they were either large or really small. Not those perfect sized ones we had flooding through just last week. Still it didn't take very long before we had enough bait for just a few hours of fishing.

Weather was really calm so figured we would give the north jetty a shot. Upon arrival we noticed large tarpon slamming schools of big mullet. (wished we had kept a few of the big ones!!) I was able to hook one, which quickly broke me off. (I forgot to lighten up on the drag. Last time I fished with that rod was around the docks).

We chased the rolling fish for a little while without much to show. Then, the ND guy gets blasted. He was fishing with a trout rod and 20lb mono leader. We chased and fought his fish for 30 minutes, everyone was guessing big jack or cobia or something. Finally, he got her up to the surface and it was the man in the gray suit. I still cant believe he didn't bite through the leader. Quick pic and it was time to come home.

ND guy couldn't have been happier. (People who don't live near the water seem to love the idea of and catching sharks, cant really argue they put up a great fight).

Great report. Just a word to the wise which I have heard for years and didn't follow others recommendations but I am now a changed man........you said "I forgot to lighten up on the drag. Last time I fished with that Rod was around the docks." You should Always store the reels with the drag completely loosened so it doesn't compress the drag washers and cause a rough drag and further as your line dries, it shrinks which could cause a bend in the Rod which could permanently damage it. Just my opinion.

You are absolutely correct. The drag does slip my mind from time to time. But, I do make sure to store my rods without any bend in them. So Im getting close to perfect, just a little room for improvement.
