FPI Inshore... Grouper / snook

Headed outside to start.. contemplated heading out to do the offshore thing... dines were tough to get to bite and didn't find any fingers inside on my normal spots, so I decided to stay inside and try for a snook.
Drifted some livies around the inlet and picked up 2 short Black grouper. Switched gears and started throwing a plug in various locations and picked up a 21" gag.... kept at it with nothing to show for it for about an hour... it was getting late and there was one spot I wanted to hit but 2 boats had been anchored around it. As I was heading in I noticed they had left so I decided to stop and give it a few casts. 2nd cast gets crushed and liked to have pulled my arm out of its socket... after a short brutal fight I won and landed a 33.5" Gag! Definitely glad I stopped and stoked to get it on my mew setup I put together just for throwing the plugs.

Beautiful Gag grouper! Those paddle tail swim baits work. I got a friend who swears by them and one trip he out fished every one on my boat, Mahi, snapper, cobia and he even landed a sail all in one trip. Is the one you're using all soft body?
Hard to tell in first pic but that may be a scamp? Nice catching bro!

    Thanks guys

BD- The forward half is hard, the tail is soft. You'd be more of an ID expert than me on groupers, but I think it is a black.

Color pattern looks like black and I've caught quite a few black grouper in the inlet but head and dorsal fin looks like scamp. Hard to tell in that pic. I really like the scamp as table fair as the meat is more delicate than other grouper. We used to catch them on our snapper/grouper spots in 80' but haven't boated one this year.

Ya, bottom two are same fish.

Interesting observation in my outings, I catch most black grouper in the inlet and those we catch are always undersize. On the offshore bar in 80'-90' most grouper I catch are gags and red grouper, only on rare occassion do we boat a legal black. The commercial dive guys on the same offshore spots seem to always get black grouper in the 20lb-30lb class along with gags. The biggest grouper those guys get are the blacks.

FISHUNTR- do you guys get any black grouper off your snapper spots?

Bacdoc- yes but only dinks. All the legal blacks ive caught have been in the inlet

DMJR- usually Zuess or Apollo but was solo that trip so mini tripod and auto timer got it done! :wink
