His view of Mexico and its citizens is evident. The two obvious questions are why was he invited and why did he agree to go, other than for the publicity.

I believe he has a view on criminality which happens to include Mexicans.
I think the power apparatus in Mexico understands that the status quo is not likely to survive, irrespective of who gets elected. If you're Trump and a foreign leader invites you over you go. Optical validation of his candidacy is important in light of the fact that he's not a politician.
