Netting fish

Today I was fishing a bar on the jon boat 2 guys about 100 yards were flying about 50 yards away from us and turning sharply I was saying to myself what are these guys doing as we were drifting we came closer to them an I saw they had a net about 15 yards wide and 30 yards long taken fish after fish out of it pretty sure they were all mullet could of been reds mixed in though as we were catching them close by. I ve seen people do jail time for this, it is illegal to drag a net correct? I was about to call FWC then2 min later a down pour came. Any info on this let me know.

Not necessarily illegal. Depends on the net, next time give your local FWC a shout, they'll take a look.

You can legally seine with a net about that size. You'd have to check the regs on what is legal in terms of the size of the mesh and sq footage of the net. It cannot be a gill net (larger holes.) I believe both mullet and reds (including all drum) can be taken with all legal size nets (both seine and cast nets.)

Copied from the FL Commercial regulations summary handbook.

The use of gill and entangling nets is prohibited in all state waters (nine nautical miles from the Gulf coast and three nautical miles from the Atlantic coast). Any net (other than a hand thrown cast net) with a stretched mesh size larger than two inches is considered an entangling net. Any net (other than a hand thrown cast net or handheld landing or dip net) constructed wholly or partially of monofilament or multistrand monofilament material is also considered an entangling net.

The use of any net with a mesh area exceeding 500 square feet is prohibited in nearshore and inshore waters. Check rule number 68B4.0081(3)(e) for how to measure a net. Tying, connecting, or fastening two or more nets together in any way so as to exceed 500 square feet of mesh area is prohibited.

Also mesh size can't exceed 2" stretched.
