Trick or Treaters

Started out slow, but they found us...maybe 60 kids.

Interesting experiment this year...When the door ball rang, I opened the door, greeted the kids and just stood in doorway with a big washtub of mini candy bars...maybe 6 or 7 popular choices. ...then just see how the kids react and see how many the kids would take.

Got the full range of responses. More than you'd think took just one piece. Most took two...a few took 4 or 5. For the kids that only took one, I told them to take more. Almost all of those kids would only take one more. One kid even said, no thank-you that's enough.

Only one somewhat obnoxious person all night...and she was an "adult" that reached into the tub for her stash and asked if her kid could have more (as he was contently walking away)

All kids wore costumes and some really good ones, too. Only one kid wasn't in costume. I asked what he was, and he said his mask hurt his face since he got hit in the head with a baseball. Raising his hair was a real welt that rivaled any bloody rubber scars that the other kids sported. "Oh, you're dressed as a kid that got hit by a baseball", I said. He just smiled with a puzzled look (probably still woozy from the hit). I told him to take some more candy.

Halloween is a good window into viewing how manners are doing. Glad to report manners are still alive and strong.(for the most part)

Always quiet here, we might get 20-30 max. I think because the houses in this community tend to be folks 3rd or 4th home, or even final purchase, so the kids are older or even gone soon after they move in here.

But, yep, the manners are still there.

Got maybe 25 in an hour. About 1/2 had a costume. Maybe 10 said thank you, mostly the littler ones. Had a few not even make eye contact, just looking in the bowl to see what I had, got a couple "Man, I wanted a ........instead".

The little kids (3-6) make all worth while.

The ones I handed candy to tonight were polite.. After we got back in from walking the neighborhood with our daughter I decided to test the honestly of the remaining kids. I put the bowl outside with a note saying take 5. Generous portions but my wife bought way to much candy... Lo and behold it only took 3 groups to empty the bowl of 150+ pieces of candy...

Its getting slower and slower every year... maybe 30 kids in all... but its all worth it when you see the really small ones give you a big smile and tell you your house is awesome... GF had to walk down the drive way and give candy
away to some kids because the witches i had hanging up scared them too much...
It sad to see it slow down like this... and yes it seems like the older ones don't know how to say thank you...

Official count was 1287, but we lost internet twice so our counters missed a few. We think we got about the same as last year, about 1350. Best one all night was a guy in an outhouse, and the outhouse was just about full size. That thing had to get heavy as the night went on. Had a tin man that really looked like the tin man. Glad it's over, though, it's like work - hardy time to enjoy the costumes. Almost all were very nice - and parents were polite and teaching the kids to say thank you.

Had about 100 - 150 kids. I had two different bowls, one for chocolate and one for candy. I told each they could pick a couple from either bowl. Most did just that. A few grabbed a few more, which was ok. The ones that only took one or two, I put about 10 more in their bag and they walked away ecstatic.

I had a grand total of 2 this year!

One year, I made up a big platter with some onions, a few rocks, a couple of frozen threadfin, and some fresh octopus. After the screams and gags, I had candy for them, of course. One little boy looked at the platter wide-eyed, and said loudly, "I better take a rock!" Before I could stop him, he had grabbed a rock, threw it into his bag, and ran away!

I had people come by twice. Some I recognized and called them on it. I don't think they were from the neighborhood but I gave them candy anyhow.

One couple I watched drive up and park their car. They get out and hit my neighbor's house first and then mine. The guy looked about 30 and she looked in her mid-20's. Hard to tell for sure but they were WAY too old an didn't even have a costume. :( Between the two of them it appeared they had over 20 pounds of candy. I was going to say something but I didn't want any issues later.

I'd say about 300 or so kids came by. I ran out of candy at 8:15.
