Left Blue Points dock at 8:30 am - hoping to net Pogeys and go to Hetzel Shoals... had to go miles south of the pier to find some scattered Pogeys flipping. Turned on the bait well - and found it died ! Had some dead frozen Pogeys - so headed to Hetzel - hoping to sight fish Cobias on Manta Rays as reported by pals. There was only a few boats on Hetzel when we arrived. As we looked for Manta Rays -- trolled a dead Pogey on one rod and a X Rap mullet lure on another. Not exactly on fire action - but maybe about 40 minutes into it -- a school of sardines came up in front of us . About that same time - a Giant Manta Ray breached out of the water - just beyond the bait school ! We were heading that way - when the dead Pogey rod went off -- it took a bit to get the nice sized King into the boat - so never saw that manta Ray again..... After awhile - a small king took another dead trolled Pogey... Not too long after -- saw another Manta Ray jump -- close enough to cast a Cobia jig in front of him -- but no dice ! .. Lost sight of that one too.... After another 30 or more minutes -- the X rap lure got hit --- turned out to be a keeper Cobia !.. He had a partner Cobia following him in -- but left when he saw the boat !... It was 12:30 - hotter than hell out there - so we quit and headed in ! pal Bill MacVittie is holding the Cobia back at the dock - he had opened his belly already - which was fully packed with small crabs !
