My daughter is a college student and a pretty good photographer... she does lots of wedding/engagement/bridal/family shoots and the laptop I got her when she started school a few years ago doesn't seem to be cutting it for her any more.
She has begun shopping for a better tool for doing her photo editing. Naturally she is the proverbial broke college student so has little money to spare, however has decided that this is an expenditure she "needs" to make. She tells me she uses Adobe software. I have gone to the Adobe website and looked for information on what kind of laptop hardware configuration is suitable to run the Photoshop and Lightroom and Creative Suite programs but all I find there are the minimum requirements. She rented a macbook pro from school for a few months to see if she liked it, and didn't. So she is headed in the pc direction.
Her budget tops out at about $700. What would you guys recommend she look for?
Thanks for the help,
Harvey

My son went that direction in grad school. Instead of continuing to upgrade the laptop he used what he had for class and went over to Tiger Direct and had them build him a custom PC. Worked well for him. TD is no longer around.
I don't think a desktop would be considered... although I'll ask her.

Faster processor, more memory, larger drive, etc.
My suggestion would be the Macbook Pro with as much processing power and memory as you can afford. College students get a discount on Apple products and she won't have any problem running all the Adobe Creative Suite programs. Mac is pretty much industry standard...
she knows that... that's why she rented one, but for some reason, she just didn't like it. What do I know... she's a female.

2012 Cape Horn 31T with twin Yamaha F300sI have a two MacBook Pros and run the entire suite on them for professional work.
Good luck to her!
I bet she is not at school, not on the bus, not in Starbucks, or anywhere else other than at home.
So why a laptop?
I get where you are coming from here and the case for a desktop being a far better platform for editing photos is strong. That said, I think most folks would prefer to have 1 machine for all purposes. Plus, if you go on a trip you might want to edit some photos while there rather than waiting to get home.
That's why I use a laptop for everything. Thankfully I was able to get an i7 laptop cheap on closeout and it works pretty well for my purposes.
why would an I-7 be better... all I-5s run 4 data threads at a time, right? Caching? Turbo?

Yeah... and I also like Toms Hardware and there's a few others, too. But nothing I could find that specifically addresses the Adobe software... mostly gaming tests and benchmarks. I don't really know how to cross the gaming benchmark information over to what works well for the Adobe suite. She doesn't need the best, just something satisfactory for her. Which would undoubtedly be lower than my standard, but then again, her pocketbook is also a limiting factor.

In stock in O.P too.
I can't stand editing on anything else than my iMac 27
I dread it when I give a disc of photos to a client and they use a poor PC laptop to look at the photos, really hurts how well my work looks.
I have all my adobe cc on it and all of my topaz plugins...
I also have my canon DPP on it as well for quick, down and dirty stuff.
it has a good screen and graphics card and works quickly and sharp....
but there is no substitute for a desk top with a 25"+ screen so you can really see what you're doing...
but that's just me....
