OLYMPUS
OM-D EM-1
THE OLYMPUS OM-D EM-1 has been our favorite mirrorless camera over the past couple of years. The E-M1 improves
upon our previous favorite, the E-M5, by adding a more sophisticated autofocus system and greater customization
of all available camera buttons. Some of the more notable features carried over from the E-M5 is the 5 axis image
stabilization, but there have been some significant updates to the E-M1. The biggest change is a max flash sync
speed of 1/320. Most other mirrorless cameras have max speeds of 1/160. Even most SLRs top out at 1/250. This
is a huge advantage for dialing in the exposure on your background. For wide shots, you can get darker blue water
backgrounds and pull in the exposure on sunball shots easier. For macro photography, a high sync speed allows one
to more easily knock out any ambient light and just have light from the strobes on the subject, and also accomplish
black backgrounds in the daytime. The customization of controls on this camera are insane. Almost any button can
can be reassigned to another function. Images shot with prime lenses look exceptionally sharp. Olympus removed
the low pass filter on the sensor and added a new image processor in the E-M1, and the results are sharpness that
meets or exceeds that from SLRs.
PROS
• Performance, sharpness, and image quality on par
with or exceeds SLRs
• Best control set of any camera in this review, beats
out most other higher end cameras
• 1/320 flash sync speed
CONS
• Larger body design leads to larger housings
• Custom white balance can’t be executed in video
mode
• Still waiting for longer focal length macro lenses
for more working distance
Images from the Olympus E-M1
are exceptionally sharp. Shot with
the Olympus 60mm macro and
a Subsee +10, focus was easy to
see on the screen and through
the viewfinder.
That is the review on it by backscatter. It seems like it is a great setup for what I will be doing. But I was hoping maybe some of you had some experience with the camera and could give me your feedback.
Thanks
Im looking to get a platform pretty similar to this so that I can take my photography to the next level. Any feedback on the likes and dislikes of the Nauticam housing for the EM-1 would be greatly appreciated also.

having said that, I haven't heard anyone that I know, from pros\pro-ams bad about the olys'.
that is a pretty wicked set up you have for diving...
good thing I'm past diving or I'd end up with another hobby that I can't afford...

Personally, since housings all cost about the same, if I was trying to economize, I would rather have a D3300 or D5500 and a housing when compared to a m4/3 and a housing. Frankly I thing your G11 probably has better DR.
I have a bunch of Oly m4/3 raw files if you want a few to play with. They are in a dropbox account and large so I will need you to PM me a regular email address.
Hey WE. I have in South Florida. Palm Beach area.
I'd be interest in looking into renting to try out different set ups. I like the g12 from Canon but I was hoping to move up to something a little fancier. I'd like to get more mega pix and the option to go wide lens for better close ups. The housing I have now only has a "fisheye" lens adapter that fits onto the housing. It restricts me at times and the vignetting I get with it is annoying at times also. I'll PM you my email. I'd like to play around with some files and see what it's like. Thanks WE
Also, this guy. >>>>>> http://reefphoto.com/shop/
Why complicate things! :wink
That's a good option for the kiddie pool :grin
I tend to go a bit deeper than 50 feet on my dives. I did use to have a simple point and shoot Olympus years ago. It was awesome for going around on the zodiac and photographing the mayhem at peanut island!
Thanks WE I got the email and download Dropbox last night. I'll take a look at them tonight.
Also I looked at the Nikon D5500. I like that camera as well. I was always a "Canon" guy because my dive buddy is a Nikon guy. Lol he shoots withba d7000 I believe and loves it. Maybe I'll try and borrow a Nikon and see what I think.
stay with a good camera you know and trust...Canon...
strange things happen to the psyche of Nikon owners, you may also develop strange rashes, nausea, and speaking in gibberish...:grin

Bahahaha good one Tim! To be completely honest that's why I was looking at the Olympus because I'm a Canon guy. I figured if I was gonna cheat I wasn't going to do it with a Nikon.
If I was gonna go for it which is still a possibility Id love to own the Canon 7d. I think that is an amazing camera.
I guess what I'm looking for is the ability to change my glass out. I want to do more palegic photos and reef/wreck scapes. So the 24.3 megapixels the T6i has would make photos crisp.
actually the t6i has rather good reviews. you might also want to look at the 80D and very affordable. I have a 7D II and am still learning all the new features on it. I bought the body on sale from B&H for $1200. it's an incredible apc-s camera. but also heavy. you can also find deals on the 6D which is FF, has wi-fi and gps. I get really good images out of mine. the 6D is also lighter than the 7D is, noticeably lighter. that's because they had to use a polycarbonate top for the gps to work....

Ya, we get addicted to lots of DR and good glass - both best in the 35mm business. :grin
I have a D90 (128K clicks) that is relegated to time lapse, a D7200 (118K clicks), a D750 (about 25K clicks) and soon a D500 because it is a no brainer and an Oly OM-D5 for a casual walk around camera - it is fine for that - but I am not really impressed.
Quite the photography arsenal you have there. Lol I was sure you were a Nikon guy. Just wasn't exactly sure how die hard but now I know. It's ok I won't judge you :grin my dive partner and fellow photographer is a Nikon guy he shoots with a d7000. He gets great photos.
