How many red flags do you need?

The 2016 Summer Olympics are scheduled to start in 5 weeks. It seems like the situation deteriorates daily.

I realize that some have worked their entire lives for the opportunity to compete....but....forget the Zika virus.
Can these people (Brazilians) really protect the athletes against a terrorist threat?

A dismembered foot and another body part still unidentified was found, according to Andre Luiz, an officer of the Military Police. Police believe the victim was a woman or young adult. A beach goer Wednesday discovered human body parts that had washed up on the shore, right in front of the Olympic Beach Volleyball Arena on Rio's famed Copacabana beach.
Other violence is also causing worries about safety during the Olympics. Last weekend, an off-duty bodyguard for Rio's mayor was shot to death in an apparent mugging and a doctor was slain in her car on a main expressway. Earlier this month, members of the Australian Paralympic team were mugged at gunpoint.
Some of the Olympic Games costs are funded by the city of Rio de Janeiro, but the burden also falls on the Rio de Janeiro state government, and it is in bad shape.

The state declared an official emergency and requested a federal bailout earlier this month but it hasn't received the money. Dornelles warned of a breakdown in essential public services and said without the emergency funds, the police force could only cover its costs to the end of the week.

This has been talked about before here.

Many potential competitors have and are pulling out because of the dangerous
    situations in Brazil.

Darn shame for these (mostly young) people who have worked so hard to compete.

Bottom line however is it shows how corrupt politico/economics TRUMP lesser issues and events.

(Sorry. Couldn't resist the Trump plug to agitate the avowed and crypto-socialists!)

With many Rio 2016 teams now on the ground for their final six weeks of training and practice, **** is getting real – too real. Worse yet, there’s really no help available when it all goes down. Consider this report from last week, sent in by a longtime Anarchist on the ground in Brazil (and remember, piracy ain’t nothing new in Brazil).

Two Team GBR Ribs were stolen overnight from Torben Grael’s Rio Yacht Club in Niteroi – the same club hit by stray bullets from a nearby gunfight a few weeks back. They were dragged to a beach in Jurujuba, not far from the US Team’s launching location.

The two British team coaches who lost the RIBs found them the next morning as they were being stripped. Already VHFs, fuel hoses, tanks, and wiring were already gone, with outboards next to go. The law-abiding GBR coaches’ immediate reaction was to threaten the thieves with calling the police.

“You think that will help you?” the head pirate said, with a big laugh. Considering the level of police corruption in Brazil, the British coaches were inclined to come up with another solution, which meant giving the pirates every dollar, pound, and real they had in both their wallets and backpacks.

One of the coaches surreptitiously snapped a pic of the pirates, and the Rio Yacht Club staff identified one of them as a top drug dealer in the nearby Jurujuba favela, and told the coach he was very, very lucky. If the Olympic fleets get away without losing any lives over the next two months, they’ll be very lucky indeed.

This is just a sad situation, I don't blame anyone who chooses not to participate based on concerns of their personal safety. I would have serious reservations if I were to compete there.

Blame the IOC for awarding the Olympics to countries that are not capable of pulling it off. Even without Zika, there are still too many problems for them to handle. Just my two-cents.......

This is it, and I believe the IOC is as corrupt as FIFA.

I was thinking the same thing.
You have to remember that many of the countries competing have similar or even worse problems than Brazil.
And...There has been a culmination of events that has made what was a decent metropolitan area considerably worse. Who could have predicted to Zika outbreak, or the impeachment and what problems this caused?

Most major cities have crime, gangs, drugs and other ne'er do wells. The crime in Rio is not significantly worse than Chicago.
My concerns lie in Brazil's ability to detect and thwart a terrorists threat.

I also have questions about Russia's sudden disqualification.

Can you imagine what Rio is going to be like after the Olympics...? Right into the toilet even deeper, they will cut the police force by 50% and the gangs will take over... Lots of places to hide in that city...

I am thinking that the pull out of the Russians Olympic teams are a Red Flag about possible terrorist activities.
The peanuts and beer took its toll. I had to fart really bad. I would normally ease away and let it out. I thought it was time for her to grow up.

Yes, yes it is. Zika thrives in cold climates.....
