Honey bee hive..... Anyone have any suggestions

SignaturestrikeSignaturestrike Posts: 457 Deckhand
I have a honey bee hive that has established itself on my front porch. They have a huge hive and I think it's time I try to find a way/someone to relocate them.
Any ideas or companies that you have would be greatly appreciated.
I'm in the West Palm Beach area.

I called a bee keeper they came and got mine. Alachua Bee Club, they may not be near you but you can use Google to find one.

The queen may get tired of being there and move if they are splitting from another colony. They usually stay for a day or two unless she likes your porch. You may be able to smoke her out. When she leaves the drones and workers will follow.

If you want to keep them, the key is to get the queen in another box, preferably a nuc box. Put a few frames in the nuc box before moving her there. As long as she is in there, the workers and drones will stay with her. Find the queen and the others will follow. I would make sure that she can't get out with a queen excluder. Some try to use lemon grass oil as an attracter. Once she gets settled, the others will too.

Yeah the hve has established itself for a while now. I've watched it grow over the last year. Was kinda CO.watching them come and go. I had a bee lady come out like 2 weeks ago but she never followed up and came back.
I would be interested in trying to just relocate them.to the side yard maybe. Or I'm ok to with someone coming and taking them that knows more and has the ability to make them happy honey producers.

I was on his boat and saw it happen. Shoulder surgery now. Now he will be screwed from lifting anything over 25 pounds for a long time, possibly ever.

More than likely have to get to her then. That will probably involve ripping that cedar/cypress out.

Yeah the lady that came out took the board of and I got.to.see the hive. It is huge. It's a good 2-2.5' long and the entire width of that board.
If I were to try and get them to move to a bee hive. Would I need a bee suit? Would I have to go in and find the Queen and break part of the honey comb where she is.and out that into the hive box??
And would I be able to move the hive box to a new location if I moved from this house.

Someone may come out and do it for you at a price. Sometimes they'll take care of it if they can keep the hive and honey. You would have to take care of replacing or fixing any damage if they have to rip it out. If you want to keep it, borrow a suit and go for it. You will have to know what you're looking for. You'll need to get all the new cells out considering they may be making new queen cells which would split the hive. If you get Polar to do it, please take plenty of pics.

When you say new cells and get them out are you meaning eliminating them or is that what I want to move to the new hive?
I'm guessing it would be bad to split the hive? Meaning one Queen and some of the workers and drones will leave and go make another hive somewhere else?

I'm a former commercial beekeeper and I can see 2 problems that you have. First, no commercial bk is going to come out and remove that hive; contrary to popular belief there is no shortage of bees! Creating a new hive or multiple hives is simple; you just split an existing hive usually into 2 or 3 new hives and provide new queens to the new splits, that's how we increase our business. Secondly, you let the hive grow too big to remove it without tearing up a good chunk of your house; so, first you must eliminate the bees then repair the damage from eliminating the bees. If you decide to just kill the bees and leave the honey and brood combs in there you will shortly have a mess, especially if there's drywall on the inside. In hot weather the honey will run and soak through drywall and make a huge mess for you. You may get a hobby bk to come and remove the bees and honey but unless he can repair the demolition aspect you will be left with the problem. Look for a bee removal and repair service; usually have some around larger cities since Florida has a wealth of bees residing here!

Wrong. Plenty of beekeepers will come get that swarm. Especially when nucs are selling at 75-125/ each. Go ahead....ask me how I know.

Wrong!! It's not a swarm, it's an established hive that's living in the wall of a house and has been there for a couple years! He's tried to get beekeepers out there; one showed and never returned! And I couldn't care less how you know about nucs, which BTW, are selling for a lot more than $75-125 each. It's far easier and cheaper for a beekeeper to go out to his beeyards and split a hive and make 2 or 3 new hives, in addition to still having the original, than it is for him to chase around the country catching swarms or ripping established hives out of walls.

    One quick comment.

I hope you can find someone to save the hive and bees.

The mostly ignorant applications of now-available pesticides have destroyed far
too many bees and other beneficial insects, resulting in people in some areas
of the world having to go out with a small brush to hand pollinate their
crops, etc -- one flower at a time!

Bonus is to enjoy the honey from your hive. Honey is an amazing food stuff
and I could rant on much further.

Killing them is not an option. I will say I did think someone would just come out. And indidnhave the one lady come out. There really isn't much damage to the house. We had one of those boards off and you could see the hive.
The more inread about bees and hives the more I'm leaning towards just trying to relocate them to a hive box.

One thing that is stumping me though is this 2 feet or 2 mile thing.
Can I move the hive to another place in the yard or are they gonna want to fly right back to where the hive was on the house??

This is one kit I found. Seems like a decent price for everything you get.
