Looks like my shutter hath crapped out on my D7000 after less than 38k images. It's never been dropped and is well cared for. I guess it's time to see what Nikon wants to charge to replace it. I'm tempted to replace it with a D7200 but the timing isn't great. At least I got to get the action shots of my great-niece learning to surf.

I still run my D7K occasionally and it has 120K+ on a 100K rated shutter actuations. It is tired the AF is going. I got my worth out of it. I'm not complaining.
As for a repair. don't send it to anyone but the Nikon repair joint in Melville, NY https://www.nikonusa.com/en/service-and-support/nikon-authorized-repair-list.page
They will have the body for two weeks but when you get it back, it will be as new as it can be. They do a good job of making it "purdy" again, in addition to repairing it. Might as well have them clean the sensor while it is there.
Yeah, that's my thought too on the shutter count. I don't know what I will ultimately do. 350 is 100 bucks more than KEH will give me.
one has rolled over 10 times (every 999 shots) and still going strong....
the other has 75000+ on it and no problems...
when canon built the 40D, they built maybe one of the toughest bodies to come out of their factory...
I think way overbuilt for their time...
my wife just inherited body #2 and some glass for here personal rat killin's....
she's happy to have it...

if it were me, and I knew what I had put the body through, I'd send it to Nikon and consider the $350 well spent...
but that's just me...
good luck Chuck in which ever way you go.

Now with that said, it looks like the D7200 is trading for $850-$900-ish. Chances are you can find a gray-market D7200 for something less than that.
If you are willing, the D500 is quite the "moe-sheen" and might be the last camera you ever buy.
I still think it is weird that the shutter gave up at 37K, or so. I would hammer Nikon on that, but it probably won't do any good. It WOULD make me feel better just to tell them what I think.
Then of course there is this. The D7000 isn't listed but the D5K is, which is the same generation as the D7K. The D90 is listed too, which is the generation before, and very similar to the D7K.
D5K
Average number of actuations after which shutter is still alive: 41,874.2
Average number of actuations after which shutter died: 56,383.8
D90
Average number of actuations after which shutter is still alive: 57,666.7
Average number of actuations after which shutter died: 69,983.4
As an aside, I own both of these cameras and am way past the Nikon stated life of 100K on both cameras, not that, that helps you.
I guess my point is if I had a camera give up at slightly over 1/3 the stated life expectancy, I would be pissed and let Nikon know about it.

Wow, that's a bunch of images for sure.
I bet you didn't use the word "crap" when your shutter slammed shut on you...lol...

Nikon told me the repair cost would be $276.00 initially. I whined a bit and pointed out that 38k is well below the constantly harped "tested to 100k actuations" and that my budget for gear was blown when I purchased their excellent 200-500 VR earlier this year. They adjusted the repair to $199 and change delivered back to me so I approved that. Now to see how long it takes to fix it and send it back to me....
Using the D80 really makes me miss my D7k. That said, I'm glad I had the D80 laying around.
hey...my old 40D's still amaze me with IQ...

Current estimate and hopefully final cost after some consideration by Nikon is $194.74 which I think is reasonable. I authorized it and am waiting for further word. I don't think they have actually started the repair work yet.
don't feel bad. I had to send my brand new sigma 150-600 back to sigma because the IS quit. shot maybe 25 frames with it.
I sent it o'night to get a fast turn around. I called them on Friday and they told me nothing was wrong with it, I just needed to shoot faster than 1\1000. I told them I had and old tamron 200-500 that I can get good shots at 1/1000 so what's the point of IS? I also told them the focus was way soft. they told me they'd call me back on Monday with an update. I told them either send me a new one or get the old one back to me so I could return it to B&H and buy a tamron. they said they'd resolve it in some fashion. so i'm waiting for a call tomorrow.

me to. I kind of liked the sigma when it worked and the docking system and software is the greatest thing since sliced bread...
I was even thinking about buying their 70-200mm f2.8 IS lens because of the stellar reviews...
not so much now...

It chatters and hunts for focus but when it finally locks on, it is tack sharp - I will give it that. About useless in a low light event because of the focus hunting.
I wouldn't buy it again. I wrote to Sigma about it and they didn't want to hear it.
Tim, I would suggest that nice Canon 70-200mm f/4 lens if you are serious about this focal length.

Thanks for the heads up...
see my post about "new toys" with a follow up from my post on Chuck's thread....
B&H may be getting all of my sigma purchases back...
Here's the review I read from dpreview on the 70-200f 2.8...

reading that review and your comments make me wonder if sigma has some QC issues...

good luck, and I think you'll be ok....
Nikon support has to be as good as canon and the canon support is really, really good...

since the shutter is the most abused part of a dslr, I believe you'll be gold for a long time with the replacement...
good luck and keep on posting...
