New Toys

I broke down and bought a canon 7D MK II and a Sigma 150-600 f5-f6.3 with usm an IS...
I wandered down to see how the GBH nesting was going on for a trial shoot in total camera default mode.
so anyway, the images are just pedestrian but shot from 200' away....
these image are seriously cropped and just to give all an idea..

the sigma is a pretty sharp tool but it weighs a ton
the camera will take some getting used to and setting it up the way I want it...
but it's like that with everything.....

Calibrate your lens then you will be golden. Good decision on that 7D, BTW.

Now with that said....."broke down." :rotflmao

I am confident you and it will do well by each other.

    Craig,
tomorrow i'll order the sigma docking doo-hickie....
the lens is pretty close at long distances but a little fine tuning will work...

sigma's new system is the future...
Nikon and canon are going to have to move pretty fast to keep up....
especially at the cost of "L glass" or "ED glass".....

Very nice Tim. I'm sure you will enjoy your new gear and capture some stellar images. Think of the weight as a no extra cost workout program.

I agree Sigma has found another gear. They are creaming everyone at the moment.

If you shot Nikon you could do that fine tuning in-body. :)

As for your new "Bigma" I assume you bought the "contemporary" version as compared to the "sport" version because of cost?

Also, not that it matters but have you seen this? If not it might be worth a look. The guy is usually a Nikon shooter but he is shooting your exact set-up. I find the guy really annoying but if you can get past that part watch from 8:00 to 19:30. >>>> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6tCUFXiDws

    Craig,
the 7D Mk II will allow you to adjust in camera...
I'm still going through "the book" which was most likely written by a Chinese tech with a lame attempt to translate to English...
I did buy the C model sigma...price was a factor, but so is the weight...
The C model is heavy enough with the 7d body which isn't light either, coupled with a battery grip...

I think the lens dock is the best way to go for the price. I was reading up on it and it is the way sigma is going with all of their glass. it will also do a better job than the in-camera adjustment, especially for very fine micro adjustments.

That kind of resolution at 70 yards or so is outstanding! Nicely done!

i have the same set-up & really like it. the lens is heavy but the range is unbeatable! especially when you consider the price. my concern was how fast it would focus but she locks on quick enough. the camera has a ton of options in the setup, i have spent several hours tweaking mine. can't wait to see what images you can get with it!

I have used one of those a couple of times to shoot events. Definitely does the job nicely. I borrowed it from a friend but I would never buy one. I am too cheap. I always thought the price was stupid.

He's referring to a Black Rapid Double strap. I thought it was kinda high too for what it is too but I can see a dedicated birder with two heavy systems to deal with liking it a lot.

    ok...gotcha...

I saw several pros at the barber motorsport lugging around Nikon D4s or canon 1DX's with huge nikkor ed or monster canon canon L teles around the track....and a camera bag and few other pieces of glass....

my busted *** back from pro moto-x couldn't stand the strain...

btw, I had to call canon support to find some hidden menus to set mine up and was talking to a tech about fine tuning focus issues...
I told him I had a sigma "c", and he said get their dock, twice as easy and just about ten minutes to do it as opposed to going through the camera...
I also asked him when canon was going to do something like that for their L glass. his response was he wasn't aware of anything coming down the pike. and he agreed that sigma is hot and on a roll....
I asked him if he'd heard of any industry rumors of nikkor coming up with a docking system...he said not that he'd heard from the rumor mill...

i have had some challenges finding some menus.....especially if you try to read the manual. but it will do some cool stuff. i like having two back focus buttons with different focus points/zones for each one. curious to hear how the dock doo-hickey works on the lens. mine seems a little soft at the far end........

    JWT,
    the manual really sux...
I had to call canon tech support to set up a few things that you'd just about never find using the manual...
canon has great tech support and you're speaking with a an American so it's easy to understand as well...

    Tim,

you are being kind about the manual! :) i found a PDF on line that is a detailed manual for setting up the AF. you can get it here. found this very helpful in understanding the different cases.

    http://www.learn.usa.canon.com/resources/articles/2014/eos7dmk2_afGuidebook.shtml

good to hear Canon has such great support. i have given up on most companies CS & just try to figure it out myself.

curious about how you set yours up if you don't mind sharing.......

    J...
    it's a work in progress....
I bumped the saturation a little, isolated the AF points to center and the AE to center.
I also set up my AEB for 5 shots in 1/3 stops, and few other small items...
I shoot a little and see what's going on and fine tune...
I had done pretty much the same thing with my 40D's...except the 40D's didn't have the latitude for adjusting like the 7D...
I'm still tinkering with my 6D as well....

    update on sigma...

I don't want to derail Chuck's post anymore so I bring sigma issue back up...
just got a call from them (1330 local)....
the tech told me there is nothing wrong with the IS on the 150-600...
they did calibrate the lens to the canon 7D MK II...

the IS definitely went t*ts up...they claim nothing was wrong with it, so they did nothing...or they fixed it and won't 'fess up to the having had a problem...they did admit the focusing was off so they handled that but said the software I have could have done that...
except the software kept looping in the "write mode" so I couldn't adjust it any way...I did inform the repair tech about that issue as well..
it is on it's way back to me o'night...
i'll see what goes down tomorrow and let you all know...if the IS is still tanked, I'd avoid the sigma like a plague...
