Pond turtles (sliders)

At this time of year I usually see a lot of the sliders sunning themselves on culverts or other things that stick out of the water. This year I see very few of these turtles. Some days I may not see any. This is not in just one lake but in at least 3 that I see most often. There were otters making the rounds in the lakes. Any ideas or is it possible they just died off?

My first thought was that there were predators in the lakes, and the sighting of otters confirms that. A family of otters can clean out a small lake pretty quickly.

There is/was a commercial fishery for turtles. As I understand, the market was the far east and Lake O was a primary area for harvest but could be they are taken elsewhere.

There is a rec harvest too and we know how y'all burnt out the ARS AND the REDFISH in the NE gulf...
