I think the 600 might get rained out.

I am far from a race fan but I have to ask the obvious question. How did the 500 and the 600 fall on the same day?

My point is these are businesses. Wouldn't you want to get as much attention as possible with the least amount of interference?

Seems like 600 should have moved dates but that is just me - let the 500 have their 24 hour news cycle then the 600 can have its turn.

They have started the Monaco race under yellow due to rain.

It is only an obvious question for you.

    Coca-Cola 600 is NASCAR

Indy 500 is Indy Car racing

Monte Carlo F1 is formula 1 racing

Wrong. Any good business guy is asking the same. So there is zero overlap in fans (this thread proves otherwise) there is zero overlap in advertisers (I doubt that is true) and there will be no competition in the press for the few precious minutes of time during the "sports" news. Got it.

So then you don't go to the St. Pete race, I take it. :rotflmao

If you'd pull your head out of your behind you would see that nascar and indy car races are scheduled on the same day often. They mostly have a different fan base

Went to a Nascar race at Daytona International once. Drove 2 hours to get there, paid 20$ to park. 15 laps later I was on the way to the car. I was home before the race was over....

Do you possibly think the fact that it's a holiday weekend that unofficially signals the start of summer play time has something to do with it?

One races in the daytime. One races at night.

Both sell out and draw a huge TV audience.

BTW ... how's you race series going? Oh, that's right you don't have a race series.

Correct. I am no race fan and mighty happy about that.

With that said, I could probably be talked into going to Daytona ONCE, for the infield show.

so tell us how badly those race series are doing since the people who run them are obviously incompetent business people in your opinion

Formula One's 12 teams are worth a combined $4.05 billion, and the average F1 team is worth $337 million with an average annual revenue of $145 million.

Hendrick Motorsports is on top again, but all teams are on the way up thanks to Nascar's new charter system. The top ten teams are now worth an average $148 million and generated nearly $1 billion in combined revenue last season

I never said the people were dumb. "Dumb" is your word. I raised a simple point as a non-race fan. I made a simple observation and am getting hammered for it, needlessly.

It is unfortunate you fellers can't take a simple observation and have a cogent discussion but I can play YOUR game, if you wish, which it seems you want.

I am not a race fan so I have no idea how the "race series"(s) are doing. This much I do know. The owners of the "race series" and how it is doing is not the same thing as the "revenue" of the teams you cite late in your post. Apples and oranges.

you did not raise a simple point you expressed an uninformed opinion and are being criticized fairly

WE I think the point is you are not a motorsports fan. I have been since six years old. It gives me a rush like no other. I was influenced by no one. Collected decals as a child, drew pics of race cars, begged for a mini bike or go cart, raced dirt bikes, drag bikes, and drag a knee here or there on a street bike. Yes I like stick and ball sports too, but nothing can give you the rush of motorsports.

As to your original question. Memorial Day is Race Day! All forms of motorsports. Google it. My wife has known to leave me alone for 35 years on Memorial Day. I ain't going no where except in front of the TV.

This is a respectful answer I can live with.

I was proven correct though, on the late news last night - my point about the news cycle. During the extended sports segments on two channels in West Palm Beach, the lead-off story was the golf tournament, with only the 500 - with the rookie winner - getting maybe a little over a minute. F1 and the 600 were not even spoken about.

    Water,
there were three different formats of racing going on, one as far away as the cote d'azure.....

the indy 500 is an open wheel event with it's own fan base and sponsor base...
the coca cola 600 is a 1000 miles away and has a different fan base and sponsor base although sponsorships do overlap from indy to charlotte....
also way different timing for the green flag....

the gran prix of monaco is in another time zone and formula one is in a league of it's own as are the fans...
and very little if any sponsorship overlap...

I had to tape formula one and indy so I could watch them before the 600....

in my opinion, Monaco was the best race of the day...

The question was raised about all three being run the same day. At least as far as the Indy and NASCAR races are concerned they were actually run on Memorial Day at one time but were changed to Sunday for a couple of reasons. First, running on Sunday allows fans to stay over and attend the race on the holiday in the event of a weather delay. The television networks like this as viewership can still be good since viewers are off work. Second, Sunday has been the traditional race days for both series although NASCAR now has more and more races on Saturday nights but are reluctant to increase that as they fear it will damage local grassroots racing which feeds the three top touring series.

Indy went "green" this year and turned into a fuel economy competition instead of a race. :wink The "winner" was one of the slowest cars in the race.

    ...

Don't forget the 24 hours at Nurburgring. Race was red-flagged early due to a vicious hail storm. Overall win was decided on a pass on the last lap. BTW, a lap is about 15 miles long.

I forgot about the "ring" but my tv service wasn't carrying it or I'd have taped it....
I might add that the "ring" long course is 28.3k or 17.6m....
the course was reconfigured and shortened by a few klicks in 1982 or there abouts....

I had the opportunity of a life time to drive 6 laps in 1979 in a Porsche Carrera sc....
I did have an instructor with me...
the car was loaned to me by a friend that also set up the drive...

it should be on everyone's "bucket list"...

I hate to be a downer, but my son that recently passed a few weeks ago from Leukemia had it on his bucket list. Unfortunately three weeks before he was to leave for Europe he was diagnosed. He missed his chance to drive and propose to his girlfriend. He talked about it for months, and what kind of car he wanted to drive. :cry:angel

    AC,
I'm really sorry to hear that...
my daddy said when my younger brother died that no parent should out live their children...

on a lighter side and relative to your son, what kind of car was he planning on driving???
I know you can drive a bmw "dtm car" now as one of the choices as well as the porsches in several flavors...
maybe you should do it to honor him....
    just a thought...
