Camera question

My wife wants a digital camera that has the capability to take clear pics of the kids while playing softball, at award ceremonies, dance recitals, ......etc. She nor I have any experience with photography, and I don't believe it will become a hobby, more of a way to share pics with family.
So what camera under $400 would you guys/gals recommend? TYIA

For that price range, I think the best option would be a long range point and shoot. The Panasonic in the link below would be an excellent fit, in my opinion. It has a long range zoom, and with a maximum aperture of F/2.8 will do a good job of taking photos indoors in marginal light.

Looks like what I need. Does it have a built in flash or will I need to purchase one to mount to the top?

It has a built-in flash, but like most built-in flashes their range of effectiveness is fairly limited. It should work fine for fill light, but I wouldn't expect it to light a child up on stage during a rehearsal or anything like that. The good news is that this camera does have a hot shoe, so you could always pickup a flash for it later on if you find the built-in isn't sufficient.

I would probably go with the kit below, mostly because I like having extra batteries (the more the better)...
