Hook regs in FL?

Any special hook regulations in FL? Going to be in the Keys in June. Wasn't sure if circles were required for certain species?

State and federal regulations require all commercial fishers and recreational anglers fishing for any reef fish species to have and use certain gear. Reef fish species include groupers, snappers, amberjacks, triggerfish, porgies, sea bass, hogfish and tilefish.
State Waters of the Gulf of Mexico Required Gear

Circle Hooks (Must be non-stainless steel and not offset) when using natural baits
    Dehooking Device
Venting Tools - At the November meeting, the FWC Commission eliminated the requirement to have and use venting tools when targeting reef fish in state waters. This change went into effect Jan. 24, 2014.

State Waters of the Atlantic Required Gear

    Dehooking Device

Is a "dehooking device" required to be more than my needle nose pliers?

Abovebored needs to read the current regs.

    From FFWCC's website:

Note: In federal waters of the Atlantic north of 28° latitude, circle hooks are required when using hook and line gear and using natural baits

De-hooking tools come in a variety of shapes and sizes to fit the need of the angler, and even a pair of needle nose pliers is considered a de-hooking tool.

So my take on it is pliers are OK and if you are south of aprox. Sebastian Inlet area on the east coast no circles required on Atlantic side.

In Monroe county, Atlantic rules apply in state waters of GOM, so I've been told by FWC .

As shown in the map in the link below, Atlantic/Gulf boundary in state waters in the Keys is US 1. It is true though that for Snook and Grouper, Monroe county waters are considered the Atlantic. So for all other reef fish, all state water like FL Bay above US1 is in the Gulf. Crazy rule because if you are fishing for Snapper or AJs in the Bay you have to use a circle hook, but you can fish the same number for Gags with a J hook. Hard to understand the reasoning.

Even if not required by the regs - circle hooks when using live and dead bait are a smart thing in my opinion. Hook up ratios are good, and not as many gut hooks. The things flat out work.

Do rules really need to be this complicated to protect our fish? Mainly referring to "It's the Gulf of Mexico now, but in the next rule it isn't".

If they eliminated needing a venting tools in the shallow waters of the Gulf, was the rule ever necessary in the 1st place?

It would be nice if they spent more time thinking about what they are doing and less time trying to be sadistic.
