Anybody test water salinity?

For Easter I went to see my dad in Port Charlotte south of Sarasota, on the Gulf coast guides state they are testing the water salinity to check if it's worth even fishing for Reds or Trout. He had a simple dip in and check device you buy in the pet store. He states it's accurate and can tell to fish the spot or not just by the salt content. When it is low not much action.

With the St Johns river being fresh water, thought that was something to think about.

Google "instant ocean hydrometer" it is a simple tester.

In that area they have been releasing a huge amount of fresh water into the gulf from the Everglades so the locals are keeping watch. Thought since the St Johns river does the same thing wondered if anybody here worries about how fresh or salty the water was before they fish.
