3/27 Suwannee freshwater quick trip

Haven't had much fishing time lately and needed to scratch the itch so I took my mom and girlfriend out on the river, and my sister and her husband brought their boat out too. We launched in Branford, watching a storm from the west approaching on the radar. I wanted to spring hop and show everyone the area but with that storm close I decided we'd just fish the banks close to the ramp. It wasn't a super hot day by any means but I caught a couple of bass on a topwater spook and that's always a good time. We fished for a couple of hours and chatted with mom before the edge of the storm caught up to us. We left just before the rain.

My girlfriend always throws this little micro cricket shaped hard plastic when we river fish and usually picks up some bream and bass too, but she didn't hook anything with it yesterday. I've caught some slabs on that stretch of river before but not this day! The water level was good. When it's high it's murky and a waste of time to even attempt fishing in IMO.

Back when I was a kid my brother and I would take a 12 foot aluminum jon with a 9 horse kicker and fish all the little feeder creeks on the freshwater side of Hog Island (at the mouth of the river) and then paddle through the overhanging branches and throw Devilhorses on the lower tides. We caught a lot of black bass about that same size, never caught any monsters. It was a lot of work but a lot of fun as well. Always fun to see a fish blowing up a topwater bait under the branches. A lot of my success would be to throw over a branch and dangle the lure in and out of the water. That seemed to drive them nuts.

Really nice, Jim. What general area seems to work for the Redbellies this time of year... Santa Fe, or Suwannee? North, or south?

The ones I catch on the Santa Fe rarely have much size to them so I like the Suwannee and local lakes more. I've gotten into beds of them a couple of times and really tore them up.
