Where to fish POST LAGOON?

So... after seeing this fish kill Im pretty much thinking that not only is fishing dead in this area, or at a serious decline. In addition I would be reluctant to add any extra (however minimal) pressure on an already direly strained resource.

So I plan on doing my fishing this summer offshore in my kayak... I hope I dont die.. I suck at swimming.

Im also wondering whats the nearest river, or decent inshore fishery outside of the indian/ banana river lagoon system? If I have to drive an hour or two it may be worth it.

    Tampa Bay has some stellar inshore fishing, and it's pretty easy to get on the bite too. Play the tides right in a productive area and it can be epic. I did a lot of kayak fishing while I lived there during college. PM me and I can give you some spots and what tides to fish. It's at least a 2 hour drive but with the right tides you can get an awesome morning and evening session to make the ride worth it.

    I'm already planning a few 2 day trips over there for late spring/summer

    I have been feeding my fishing addiction with bass. It's not near as exciting as saltwater/brackish fishing, but it works.

    I actually told people on this site that a lot of the old timers around here have done just that...Switch games.

    Took a drive this past week up to Huntsville to visit my daughter. On the lone bass fishing outing we had, I wound up catching a bowfin.
    Probably went six pounds and, until I saw it, I really enjoyed the adrenaline rush and feel of a bent rod. Then, whammo - stinking bowfin.

    <sigh>
    This is what I'm relegated to. Bowfin and catfish.

    Been traveling to the Gulf a little the past three (3) weeks. Tampa Bay and Ft Myers / Sanibel / Captiva.

    Awsomeness!
