Craig, I hear ya. Its $200 more than the old one at Adorama right now. Steeeeeealllllllll. It would be a different story if I had a bunch of people calling me for images. But, since they aren't, I personally cant justify the cost. Not this week anyway. It looks wonderous. I wish I could do it with no guilt. I know someone here will............
This is what it would be doing. You guys keep talking about how many zillions of Spoonies there are this year; I wish you would send them over to me. I went back out this morning. Not more than 10.

It is a good thing the lens is only $3K then! :rotflmao
typo...still, $3k is out of budget...
you don't maintain and race an offshore sail boat...
I need to replace a $2k #2 genoa jib and do my annual haul out...
and that adds up to more than $3k...

It gets easier to justify if you consider resale value and take care of the glass. It gets easier to talk yourself into if you take that approach.
Says the guy who has a 18 year old screw drive 300 f4 nikkor as his best glass......
If I can pick up a new job before I burn through my buyout money I might indulge myself with a 200-500 Nikkor. Right now I am enjoying the decompression phase.
If you like a lens, have an occasional use for it, but can't afford to buy it outright there are places you can rent the lens.
I've used Borrow Lenses but I'm sure there are plenty of places to chooses from.
i can usually borrow my friend's glass if i really need it and he's not shooting, or needs it for what he plans to shoot...
when he and i are out shooting together at bird rookeries, etc., he uses his 100-400 L more than any other piece of glass he has.
i'd still like to own my own...
but as mentioned previously......

That's an advantage, borrowing a lens from you're friend. L lenses are superior lenses, I don't own any L lenses.
I "do" have a 70-300 f4 which is a full frame sensor lens which translates to a 112-480mm lens on a crop sensor camera.
It's a very nice lens at much less than half the price.

it is indeed a wonderful piece of glass...
however, at $4k, it's out of my budget...
canon is real proud of their EF-L-IS glass...

The lens is a very reasonable, fair price.

Maybe if I get this job I am interviewing for this week I'll be able to afford it and a new camera.
