Pit bulls attack homeless man; 1 dog killed . . .

PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. - Deputies say a homeless man was sleeping when a pack of pit bulls started biting and attacking him overnight in suburban West Palm Beach.

The incident occurred on North Military Trail just north of Belvedere Road.

Law enforcement said a person called 911 saying they heard someone screaming in the area.

Palm Beach County sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene and tried to get the pit bulls off the man. They were forced to kill one of the attacking animals.

Deputies canvassed the neighborhood looking for more of the dogs but did not locate them. They believe the dogs are strays but that is not clear.

The victim was taken to an area hospital where he is conscious and talking but suffering from bite injuries.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Will say again and again and again. These dogs must be banned.

My son was recently sitting on a bench talking with others and watching his little rescued boxer run and play with other dogs at a local fenced in dog park when a white trash woman came in with a couple pit bulls.

All the others picked up their dogs and left.

Then there is one good Pit Bull because the only good Pit Bull is a dead Pit Bull.

Tell it to my daughter who took 65+ stitches in her wrist and a year's worth of physical therapy to get over her Pit Bull experience.

I repeat, the only good Pit Bull is a dead Pit Bull.

And somebody will probably post a picture showing how sweet and adorable these dogs are and it's just a matter of owner responsibility. I say phase them out without taking away someone's current pet unless it is aggressive.

Against Florida Statute and Dade Counties Grandfathered in local ordinance has been deemed un enforcable by the courts. Breed bans have been tried many ways and in many places... They have always failed... Ontario just admitted that their ban put in place ten years ago was a miserable failure......

How about requiring owners of such dogs to have, say, a hundred thousand dollar liability policy, and carry proof of that with them every time they are out with their animal?

Lack of same means the dog can be confiscated on the spot and euthanized within ten days if such proof not received.

Have a couple friends that have introduced adult pit bulls to their family with small children. They honestly have no idea of their behavior.

NO dog law in Florida can name a specific breed..... Target a specific breed, or be directed towards a specific breed....

And that is a dirty shame.

There are bans on pit bulls but it seems Florida had the ban lifted in 2 counties . I don't think it has always failed but I am not sure of the politics involved.

Yes, it's very hard to enforce BSL. So Pitbulls continue to maul innocent victims to death & maim so many more.

If BSL eliminated Pitbulls there'd essentially be no more life threatening attacks by Pitbulls in those jurisdictions.

The mindset of many Pitbull owners makes BSL a selling point.

How do the other breeds know to step up the attacks?

Your's is the "magic pill mindset". For you it's never the Pitbulls.

    No good news above.

It seems to be getting to the point where we have to be carrying even when going out
for a local walk with our grandchildren or the friendly family pooch.

I raised a sweet and loving female red nosed pitbull years ago and she stayed with my fiancé and eventually was raised with a little girl and protected that little girl like no other. I understand the bad rap but also understand the breed and irresponsible owners trying to raise this breed. I've always had a away with dogs and am far from a trainer but every dog I raised I had a place and time meaning I had the time to train it properly. I would not hesitate to train another pitbull they are very loyal and protective of their owners and protection in this day is a good thing.

Pitbulls are a powerful high performance machine that most ignorant dog owners can't handle. They just don't know the potential of the dog if things go sideways. Just as you wouldn't give a teen the keys to a Ferrari, an inexperienced/irresponsible dog owner is a bad match for a pit.

Lawyers and insurance companies are probably the best incentive to keep this breed in check. And definitely a "yes" to carry while walking your pooch or out on a stroll with your human family. Threats come in many forms and a loose pit is definitely a threat to be wary of.

Does look like the forum has changed over past 7 or 8 years. Was 50 / 50 on here.. Even with my Dobermans, I always hated Pitts.. And not because of guys like you, It is awesome you can do that and raise a good one. It is the 80% that think they can, or just dont care and love that puppy, then throw it in the backyard. Thus, no training creates (in most situations) a dog and kid killer. Bred in and can't be bred out. Can be trained out, not bred... It is not the same as the American stafford shire terrior JB and me would see at the dog shows. These things are bred even deeper to kill... Sad for the breed...
