Shad Fishing 1/30 & 1/29

Another day of Shad fishing with Jeff (flats flocker) on the St Johns with some better results. No wind and calm clean water. Got on the spot around 10:00 am to find no crowd and no one fishing, surprising for a Saturday. This enabled us to drift versus anchor up and each drift we picked up a fish. The fortune was short lived as eventually 10 boats and half a dozen kayaks showed up and seeing the floatilla coming our way we were forced to anchor up. Thought about the yesterdays trip watching Dan Thompson target catfish gave me the idea of using a large chunk of Shad with a sinker out the back while we threw he long rod. Over then next 4 hours we each caught 7-8 shad a piece and eventually that chunk of Shad on the bottom paid off with a 7 LB channel cat. Pretty darn fun day on the water. The (American) Shad are here, if you can get out now is the time.

Where is this at? Really would like to try the shad and probably a great fish for my 5weight. I'll be in a kayak most likely if there a spot to launch not too far from here?

Good day sir. it is an easy kayak trip. put in at CS Lee and paddle upstream (to the right under the bridge) less than a mile. The Econ will run in on the right. Water is getting higher but the shad are decent. Got ten Saturday in 2 1/2 hours, saw several other (crap load and I love it when every bodies catching)(we're not stalking! it's a spawn. You can go in the morning or at midnight, the fish are going to keep moving and feeding) folks doing as well. I fished Lemon Bluff area today and got twelve in a little less time. I have tried several colors on fly and spinning but continue to be more productive with chartreuse and/or other brighter shades (very light lemon yellow. just off white) which is odd to me. I have caught the majority in the past (three/four years) on gray with black and silver glitter or just straight black. Get over there any where between Lemon Bluff and Hatbill and enjoy. Might have to move a little to find the current that the shad prefer but when you find it your good to go. Best

Its great fun and a 5wt is perfect. As Green Slayer mentioned that's where we were, in fact he was probably one of the kayaks next to us. Some of the most enjoyable non stop action fresh water fishing you can do. Get out there!
