This explains why Garmin has not been able to do a warranty exchange on my 44dv Echomap transducer. It works fine in depths <50', after that it works inconsistently before losing bottom all together in around 300'. Pretty poor for technology that promises 1,000'+. They have told me they will honor the warranty once this is resolved. Anybody else encounter Garmin problems related to this?

I remember hearing something about them loosing a court battle about rights to use certain software. I'll assume that this is the issue you are talking about.
If I owned one of those right now, I'd be careful about uploading an "updates" to the device if it were currently working well. I would be concerned that a new update might remove the software they they have license issues with & make the device work less well.
