Hey East Central peeps -- just cloning my report that I posted over on the Big Bend side (our normal port of call is Cedar Key). Just wanted to say what a great time we had, and what a great fishery you guys have!
Nia and I decided to take advantage of the long weekend and kayak the 'pole and troll' zones of the mosquito lagoon. It was was our first time there, which means I had 0 expectations of catching any fish (it takes me a very long time to learn a place when all I have is the kayak).
We launched at the
WSEG boat ramp around 8am.

This area starts you off in a pole and troll zone, so we worked the islands and flats for about 1.5-2hrs. Saw some fish feeding, and to my surprise managed to find a slot red in about 1.5' of water (about 19"~). Wasn't able to get a photo as he flopped out of my hands early (whoops). After that we decided to make the mile+ trek across the channel over to the other no motor zone, and fished the tiger shoal / vann's island / bird island region.
Fishing was very slow (just small nibbles/slow takes).
Then, while about 100' from shore over spotty bottom (about 1.5' depth), something smashed my top water lure and the fight was on!
To much excitement I landed this beautiful 7lb+ / 28"+ trout:

Release:

Within the same area Nia and I proceeded to catch another 5lber+, and a pair of 3lb trout. Both on top water and on The Slick lure.

If you ever have the chance to fish the area, it is truly a fisherman's paradise! If I can have that much luck on my first time out, in a kayak, I can only imagine the life time catches the locals must enjoy.

Is that algae based? I was a little disappointed -- our water (cedar key) has actually been more clear... and it's normally a disaster.
