Yesterday, Nikon made several announcements, two of which are great.
Nikon announced two camera bodies, ahead of the Olympics, the: D5 and D500. The D500 will be of most interest to those here.
Great Auto-focus, huge buffer, HUGE, stupid high on the ISO, backlit buttons on and on.
We Nikon users have waited a loooooooong time for the D300s replacement. Here it is. It just flat hammers the Canon 7D which hit the street a few short months ago.
The price isn't bad.
Here is a quick comparison.

yes the d500 has some "insane" specs...
I don't know what I'd need iso 1million+ for though...
and Nikon has always had the jump on AF since forever...
the 5ds canon with 50 mp and 60+ af points does an excellent job as it is...
I'm too committed to canon to change at this point as are many others with sony or pentax...
can't deny Nikon's bragging rights though...

I believe canon probably gagged with the announcement of the d500 and d5....
they had just about caught up them in the AF arena with the 7d mk2 and the 5d mk3s...
they may scramble and retire both the 7d2 and the 1dx very soon if they expect to keep up with the sports shooters....
I remember the 50d had a really short shelf life and the 5d mk2 really wasn't around that long either...
I came close to buying a refurbished 5d mk3 not long back....
however, my toys now include a Porsche and it needed a clutch and a water pump at the same time...ouch...

the question is will it even be close to the Nikon d5???
I know they have been working on a new generation of sensors, but Nikon's AF systems have always surpassed canon's...
the AF in the 7d mk2 and the 5d mk4 was a huge step for them towards some kind of parity, only to have it slip away again...
however, I wonder if there is a point when too many AF sensors may become a handicap...
I had read in an article recently (and I don't remember where) that almost all sports shooters usually just use the middle sensor as opposed to an array...I believe it may have been in one of topaz's news letters under their featured photographer...

well I'm going to test it at the indy serious opener in NO, then 2 weeks later at barber motorsports track ...
if the canon focusing matrix can nail it all is good...
I wasn't thinking of that particular scenario when I posted earlier...
however, the 1dx and the canon 5d mk 3 focusing matrix pretty much covers about 75% of the frame...
I have had an opportunity to spend the day with one and was pleased...
the owner (and close friend) will be going with me to the races....
we'll see what happens...
