Dade County Liionfish Derby

The Biscayne Bay Lionfish Smash will take place on Saturday October 29th, 2011. This event will be the first Lionfish tournament run in Dade County waters and we would love for you to join us! Sign up to help slow this invasion of our home waters...

Just a few years ago we started spotting the occasional lionfish here in biscayne bay and now it is tough to go diving or lobstering without seeing several of these striped invaders. These fish are venomous -not poisonous. They are great eating and their firm white flesh is quite similar to hogfish or porgy.

Lionfish are slow moving ambush predators and like dark crevices, wrecks, seawalls, metal debris and rocky ledges. They seem to like the same habitat as our spiny lobster and your favorite lobster spots are a great place to find and kill them. Lionfish can be easily caught with a 3 prong polespear or common bait nets.

The purpose of our tournament is to raise awareness about how easy it is to find, harvest, safely fillet, and eat these fish The proceeds from our tournament will be donated to the Rosentiel School at the University of Miami.

There is a $500 CASH PRIZE for the longest lionfish and a $200 CASH PRIZE for the smallest lionfish. There will be a prize for most lionfish announced at the captains meeting. We are having a dive gear raffle that will feature spearguns, floats, dive bags, framed prints and more...

This tournament is open to freedivers, scubadivers, shoredivers, paddleboard divers, and anyone who wants to kill lionfish. If you dont have a boat or simply don't have any spots contact our sponsor AQUATIC EXPLORERS at 305-798-3919

The captains meeting will take place on Thursday, October 27th at
8pm at the RICKENBACKER FISH COMPANY at the

RICKENBACKER MARINA.

CAPTAINS MEETING MOVED T0 WEDNESDAY OCT. 26th DUE TO UM FOOTBALL GAME ON OCT. 27th
