Pilchards Gov't Cut

Newbie question here. I saw a very informative video with Bouncer Smith that talked about how to catch live bait in Miami. In the video he sates that during this time of year; November, December, January; the best place to catch Pilchards is in Government Cut on either side. The higher the tide, the farther in (West) they will be. My question is, where are the Pilchards during the rest of the year? Offshore?

They migrate through in big schools, especially this time of year. Best way to find them in my opinion is to look for diving birds, especially pelicans. Some good areas to check are the beaches around Bear Cut and Key Biscayne, grass flats and finger channels south of Key Biscayne and as mentioned Government Cut. Some times of the year it's hard to find any or they are offshore in deeper water.

They have been really thick in the cut along the rocks... You'll see the pelicans waiting for them with the tide...

An easy alternative for anyone needing pilchards is to target the bridges that are closest to the cuts (MacArthur or Bear Cut bridges down south or 125th Street up near Haulover.... You need to be there more than one hour before dawn with a bag of chum - set up on the downtide side of the bridge anchored back up in the shadows so that you can work your net on the shadow line.... Once you've drawn them with chum one or two tosses of a heavily leaded net (mesh no smaller than 3/8" and at least a ten foot net....) you'll load your well.

The nice part is that you're relatively sheltered and not drifting near rocks, etc. Hope this helps
