Went out Sat, Dec 12th with a guy I've never fished with, did play golf with him however.
Left Caxambas ramp @ 7am, water temp 72.6 and a low tide, still going out, negative .75.
Made it out to the beach and slayed the hand size jacks and lizard fish. Lovely! We were throwing topwaters and jerk baits.
Tiring of this, into Blind Pass. Caught some larger jacks and had a 6 foot shark slash (missed) a 12" jack I was bringing in on a blue Yo-Zuri.
To the Morgan River. Trolling motor down and 3rd cast on the Yo-Zuri put a 16" trout in the box. 5 minutes later, a 12" mangrove snapper joined him. Anchored and caught more trout (1 keeper) and many short mango's, jacks and a few smaller sheepshead. We did manage 2 more keeper trout and mango's on shrimp/popping cork combo's.
Back to the beach and nothing.
To the inside where I had caught a few trout 2 weeks ago. I was casting towards to the mangroves and a mud flat. Nothing. My fishing buddy was casting a white swim bait into the 6-foot deep boat channel. 17" trout. A 16" trout and then for 30 minutes, 20+ short (14-3/4") trout. Almost every cast a trout. I caught maybe 10 to his 30. Too bad they were all short, but fun nonetheless. Time went on and the bite stopped. Pulled up the anchor and drifted down current about 100 yards.
White swim bait and Yo-Zuri produced 3 keeper trout about 17" in about 5 minutes. 2 Limits of trout completed.
Final tally: 8 trout, 15-1/4 to 17 inches and 3 mangos. Weather was breezy but very tolerable. Water was nice and clean but no bait was noticed. All in all, a good day with a person I would fish with again.
With a full schedule, may not be back on the water until Dec 27th. Hopefully this coming weekends cool down won't be too drastic, except to bring in some larger sheepshead.
Till then, be safe and save some for me!
