Bait Reports....?

Looking for a bait report? I usually don't fish bait, but will be doing so this weekend off a friends boat. We will be in the Ft. Desoto area, so I am thinking the Skyway, but is it still on the flats out that way?

Shouldn't have an issue with the bait on the flats by the fort. At least as of last weekend.

Thanks Loose....that's what I was looking for.

Icatcher, I have seen some reports of red tide out that way, but I think it spotty...hopefully we can just get our bait and get moving to a different area of the bay.

Fort Desoto has quite a bit of red tide. Saw plenty of dead floating fish around maintenance hole. All along the flats of the Meissner too.

Mullet, pinfish, stingrays. Smell was really bad. The kind that makes you start coughing. Deeper we got in the worse it got! Quickly turned off the live wells and ran out of there.

Bait is still on the beaches, blacked the livewell out in two throws on Friday.

Just an update....we fished last Sunday and had no issue catching bait both at the skyway and range markers outside of Cockroach Bay. EASY couple throws of the net and we were set.

Just as an FYI, there was no bait up closer inside the bay on the markers around Gandy. Had to net it up on the flats. Decent bait 2-3"

It's been a couple of weeks with some cold weather since I was out last. Are the greenbacks still on the shallow flats around Honeymoon/Caladesi?

Edit Report: Bait was scattered. Only got a few mixed in with plenty of pins. Didn't spend much time chumming for a short trip. Lots of small bait over the flats getting nailed by the pelicans.

Was at Ft.Desoto today, Bait is all gone, nowhere to be seen. Heard some locals saying they will be back in a week or two. I believe them. Things should start picking up next week and the first week of March.

Were you in a boat or on the pier?

Checked a couple spots yesterday around John's Pass down south to the Fort and found very little bait. Shad is there but you have to look real hard for it. Skyway still has bait but it's deep.

2" white bait pretty much all over the Skyway but you'll need the heavy net and or chum to get them. We are throwing a 10' 2.5lb per foot 3/8th and that was the ticket. Lighter Humpback nets were not getting it done. I have not been out to John's Pass in a while. Anyone have a bait report for around there? Seeing anything yet?

JP report, very little white bait, some sitting on south end but couldn't net, small patches nothing major. Water looked like green gross and milky.

No bait around markers in south shore area yet. Went to skyway, not much.

Stopped in at O'neils, talked to a gentleman that said there was bait at the south skyway, but it was deep.
