I tend to agree with the article.... I would also say; "everything was better in the 90's"... I drove across the state yesterday, then back to today... It really is amazing the difference in the weather each day... Even the sky/clouds are different.

Interesting. The panhandle had an amazing few years of Cobia fishing in the late 90s, and several folks mentioned El Niño. (Cobia to us panhandle guys is the same as sails to you SE guys, cobia are one of the main fisheries)

One things for sure, the fishery has declined SIGNIFICANTLY in the last decade...and everyone quotes the late 90s as the "good ole' days". I fished hard there for 15 years and as much as I could in the last 5-8 years. Whether it's a cycle, El Niño, true population decline coupled with increasing harvest pressure, or a butterfly flapping its wings in the Indian Ocean, I couldn't tell you...but it's in decline and half of folks are in denial about even admitting that.

I've fished Cobia in Pensacola and Destin many times... Great stuff...

Growing up in Florida and Hawaii I have seen it decline... Even in Hawaii as remote as it is...

Read the book, The Barefoot Mailman, it describes what it was like in 1800's SE Florida...

It's funny you posted this Pete. I was honored when Capt VJ reached out to me the other night and invited me to fish this very tournament as an angler for him and his bosses on a private 60' Jim Smith called "Unbelievable" that VJ is now the skipper of. Can't wait to fish this event (now in it's 75th year) on Dec 11th-13th.

Good for you Dave good luck I have been debating entering the Pelican Yacht Club Tournament on my boat this year. I will be down next weekend to pick her up soooo if I can put together a crew you never know.
A buddy of mine just bought a 70 Hines Farley. It is in NC for a refit right now, I suspect we will be fishing the sailfish tournament trail next winter on it.

Small world Pete! His Captain, Dennis is a good friend of mine from back in my Brielle days. I spoke to Dennis two weeks ago and he was telling me about the boat and sea trial. That boat has had an amazing history as the Double Dog and I can guarantee Dennis will keep your boss in the winner's circle with that hot rod.

Let me know the dates you're down. I'd like to get together if you're available one night during your stay.

My trip next week I am only in for a couple of days to pick up the Osprey and get her Settled, but when we come down for the holidays I will be there for a couple of weeks. We will have to get together.
  • Interesting is the fact that the Western Atlantic Sailfish population, while not healthy, is stronger now than it was in the late 90's

(But remember, local abundance is different than a healthy stock, and lack of abundance on a local level also says little about the health, overall , of the entire stock.)
