Staying on Vaca Cut Thanksgiving Week

My wife and our 9 year old boy are spending next week in Marathon. The condo is on Vaca Cut. We want to bottom fish and snorkel. Not looking for any secret spots, but what are some of the better spots to use that are listed on the Top Spots chart (I have one on order that should arrive any day)? Also, would it be worthwhile to troll for a few hours in the early morning. I was curious if there is a general preference for either the Gulf side or the Atlantic side.

Thanks in advance!

Greg

I was out trolling this past weekend, the dolphin are still around, we picked a few up every day between 200' and 500' in Marathon. Good luck we had a few days of 0 wind hope it stays that way for you.

Well be in Marathon as well -- on sisters creek -- looks like the weather is going to be nasty the next few days -- so who knows what next week will bring -- I recommend always having options -- the mackerels should be going on the gulf side (anywhere 8+ miles out - depth will be around 9-10 feet) chum it up -- and we use live shrimp or cut bait...you'll need at least some 40 lbs. mono as leader for the toothy macs

We fish the 7 mile bridge if the wind is an issue as well...usually stopping there first on the way out -- you will need some weight as the current really rips around the bridges...we use live pins and have hooked some nice fish there...(cobia).

If you can get offshore -- then it opens up the reef for snapper -- or trolling deeper for Sails, hoos,; we hooked a sail last year (thanksgiving)off sombrero light in 200 feet...

    Good Luck - tight lines.

Your best snorkel spots will be Coffins Patch and Sombrero Light. Both areas have mooring buoys but they do get crowded especially over a holiday. As said by others above, the spanish mackerel will be in the bay and is usually a slam dunk activity. Allow at least a half hour for the bite to develop. You will need to run a chum bag.

Depending on the wind direction Hawk's Channel can be good on the various rock piles and humps and bumps. The main reef in 40-90' of water should provide plenty of snapper action and hopefully some grouper. Here again, you will want to chum heavily. As we say, CHUM and they will come. Idle around and watch your depth recorder. Anchor up current of marked fish schools.

Do your trolling oceanside. 100-300' for wahoo, sails and kingfish. 300-600' for late season mahi which has been pretty good looking at recent reports. Learn to rig ballyhoo trolling baits if you need that skill.

Weather and wind will decide a lot of where you will fish. Stop in and chat with the local tackle shops for the most current info.
Happiness is the journey, not the destination.
