Dolphin on Raft - U.S. Coast Guard

Cleared Boca Inlet at 630am in my 15ft inflatable. There was a heavy fog and light rain to greet us. We pointed the bow east and cranked down on the tiller on the 20hp Suzuki. We found a weed line about 6 miles off and another around 12 miles. We trolled both but they were not holding any fish so we continued to push east. At 18 miles out I see something big and brown floating. It turns out to be debri that you dream of. A big wooden box crate that was covered with life underneath. We trolled by it a couple times but no strikes. We decided to stop on it and deep jig. Shortly after a big school of Dolphin showed up. However, we tried giving them lures, jigs, and chunk bait but they were not hungry. We ended up with one triple tail.

While we were fishing the crate we see US Coast Guard steaming towards us. They pulled up to us to make sure we were Cuban Refugee’s. After a short safety check we were good to go. They asked us if there were any fish under the crate. We informed them that there were a bunch of Dolphin that were not hungry. They asked if we were done fishing it because they had spear guns onboard and were going to jump in and spear some fish. We told them we were done and they could jump in.

On the way back in we stopped at those same weed lines we saw on the way out and caught two 7-8lbs fins. We had the school around the boat a couple times but just like the fins under the wooden crate they seemed lethargic and were not hungry. I think the full moon gave them lock jaw.

Before you guys jump on me for being so far out in an inflatable. I have all the safety gear and an EPIRB.

& the USCG following you apparently...
You can't get much safer than having a private escort like that.

Nice catch. I went out for just a couple of hours today & stuck near shore. I probably should have ventured out a little further.

    Thanks for the report.

Cool report. I was under the impression you found dolphin under a raft that the coast guard was checking out. Way off...

I didn't realize coast guard could jump in with spearguns while on duty.

Maybe they were on break.:wink Good for them. I hope they had some grilled Dolphin back at the base. Congratulations to the OP on a good day.

We left the crate after we were free to go and went about another mile offshore. I kept an eye on Coast Guard and they must of stayed in the same spot by the crate for over an hour. So I assume they went in. They said if I was still going to fish the crate they were going to mark it and come back later.

    Nice work!
We've had some 34 cubans land in Key Biscayne and keys in the last 3 days!!!!

I am all for the CG spearing some dolphin on or off duty. Good morale builder, underwater training, and on the water instead of moored at a dock, BUT they must stay further south if they want to truly guard our coast.

That is awesome, we all forget just how lucky we are...to be able to fish the Gulfstream in an inflatable dingy.

It's the new fuel injection that recently came out. The only negative would be since they are still relatively new most shops have not worked on them much. I had a problem with one of the warning lights coming on. I took it to two different mechanics and they both said they haven't worked on these models much yet. A Suzuki rep ended up picking it up and finally fixing it. The positive is the fuel burn in outstanding. I get approx 10 miles per gallon.

Cool report. I was under the impression you found dolphin under a raft that the coast guard was checking out. Way off...

#1 First off nice fish! Big fish little boat and dig the safety mindedness!
(I am an old fart who needs 600 horses and 26'+LOA beyond reef, but I once ran a 17' whaler to ABACOS w escort... LOL)
#2 I have much respect for USCG and people would be surprised to learn of some of the on duty activities~!
(none of which i have ANY issue with. I have all my licenses, LBO, me and my guys play by the rules)

That being said, we were once boarded by USCG off White Sands WHILE catching some BIG hoos in 100% Bahamian waters
The guys checked our passports, immigration cards and LBO thru computer.
We were within limits, had legally cleared our pelagics were whole yada yada. a nice wave goodbye and a question

We were then asked what depth was best for us on wahoo bite (450')
As they untied, 2 crew members radios cutter from inflatable. I swear to god 15 minutes later said cutter had 3 80's deployed off back and promptly hooked up! We laughed as they leadered fish 10' off the deck and it was 50+++ and met w 15' gaff!!!

if their "training" exercises include shooting Triple tails off pallets so be it and thx much for report. e

After they said they jump in on debris and spear I asked if they had fishing poles on board. They laughed and said "yep".

Having been on a CG cutter for three years, a 311' weather cutter, we spent a lot of time drifting around in assigned areas and hell yeah we had fishing rods on board. You try floating around for 30 days in calm seas with nothing to do but paint and clean. Sundays were definitely spent grilling and chilling, however possible.
