Nice series and a beautiful vessel. Were you camping up there? We were there last weekend.

Chuck - State park hours negate most sunset to sunrise photo shooting - unless you're "camping". I've been scoping out the camp sites at various parks and I rode through both camp grounds there. Looks like most folks are setup with RVs or trailers. What kind of setup do you use for camping?

That shot with the upper rigging went in because the height of the main mast seemed out of proportion to the rest of the sail setup. Maybe someone could educate me on the what for?

    Darrell,
we have two replica fishing schooners up here that the Biloxi seafood museum operates for cruises and parties...
they are both gaff rigged like the schooner in your images...
the main mast is much taller than necessary, but not as extreme as the vessel you shot...
the purpose for the taller spar on the main mast is to set a flying top sail from the foremast to the main mast above the foresail gaff top...
the rig on your schooner may be even taller to carry a much larger flying topsail....
that could be the only explanation I know of....

    btw...nice images

We have a 30 foot travel trailer we bought about 9 years ago and have used the crap out of it. We've probably camped at Fort Clinch at least 50 times since then as it is an easy weekend trip for us. I've seen folks camp in most everything you can imagine there from million buck Class A rigs to hammock's strung between trees.

    Darrell,
on the face book page there were a few images of the schooner flying a topsail on the main mast...
    hence the extra spar length...
I think I saw an image of the boat with a flying topsail (rigged above the foresail to the top of the mainsail)in one of the thumbnail shots...
it a shame there were no images of the boat under a "full press" of sails...that would have been awesome...

    Tim,

An asset for fisherman's races and pilot boat service, but not so much for the tourist trade or "various educational programs"?

But it looks cooler, no? Maybe it is the old school equivalent to today's wrap craze.

the main topsail adds a lot of sail area and helps with upwind performance....
usually when a flying topsail is rigged with a topsail, the boat is on a reach which is it's fastest point of sail...

schooner racing was a major deal here on the coast in the late 1800's to around the 1920...
usually a big family affair to watch the races on sunday...

we have 2 schooners sailing now. both have different hull designs and sail plans...
the Biloxi seafood museum stages several races a year for braggers rights...

it's impressive to see them out with every bit of canvas the can hang....

and I'm an idiot because I never photographed them racing...

Did you happen to go inside the Fort when you were there? There are some decent photo ops there. The first Saturday of the month they have some re-enactors and they do special events as well.
