Speck Fishing

I was out around Canal Point just outside Lake Okeechobee about a week ago and was surprised to see that they were already catching some decent specks in that canal. The gate was open a little and some water was moving out of the lake. I saw about a dozen people fishing from the bank, and they caught about a half a dozen fish in about 10 minutes. There is not much action on this board, but I'm hoping to get a heads up from some of you when they start hitting real good.

I went speck fishing yesterday. Fished the North end of Lake Okeechobee including quite a ways up the Kissimmee River. Two of us fishing jigs and minnows for about five hours got no bites at all, zero. It was really windy so most of the time was spent in the river. Caught one skinny looking bass by accident. I won't be trying again until after we get a decent cold front.

one of my buddies reported trying for various fish recently on the Kissimmee River but only was able to catch 15 catfish, which they love to eat.

Nothing wrong with catfish . The speck fishing should get good when it cools more there.

I agree with you, nothing wrong with the kitties! I have loved them since a buddy took me fishing when I was a kid and we caught some small bullheads on hot dogs.

catching a few...I've only tried Spec fishing 6 times, on purpose...LOL. Long career here. The 2x4's are the scale, all of'em at least 3 boards...Taste is motivation!

Nice sized, good, clean and healthy looking specks. I don't even have to ask if you enjoyed dinner. Thanks for the report.

My wife is really picky about eating fish...just in the last 6 months I found a way to cook'em that she likes. Her new favorite is Specs and it is a good thing because her other fav is Sheepshead and I was down to the last bag in the freezer. The big Sheeps are also waiting on me over in the IRL so gotta go this week once or twice to try and get some.

REPORT: Lake Harney was fairly busy this weekend with DUCKS and SPECS. I was able to catch approx 15 and keep approx 8 everyday last week and getting off the water by 1030 / 1100. Small White Spinners tipped with Minnow - Yellow Jighead/Chart Eyes w/ Minnow - 12 - 18" off the bottom, drifting the Lake.

Thanks for the report. I have two of my grown kids that live up in Longwood, which is not too far from Lake Harney. Maybe next time I go up that way to see them I'll drag the boat along and hit up Harney or some of the other lakes around the area.

Tried my luck out at Blue Cypress Lake last Friday the 8th. Fished from about 7am until 2pm. Mostly fished the middle of the lake at various depths, but mostly a foot or so off the bottom. Used both minnows and jigs, and sometimes a minnow on a jig. We also fished the edges and a canal that runs into the lake. Three of us got three bites all day, two of the specks were little dinks about 7" long and one was just barely a keeper. We released all of them. I was kind of expecting a good bite after the cold front but no such luck.

Got out on the lake yesterday evening and my girls got 4 little specks in about an hour. We were trolling green and chartreuse roderunners and Berkley power bait jigs. Most of the specks looked like they were getting ready to spawn. After the girls agreed upon a name for each of them, they were released to fight another day! We had a blast!

Glad you had a blast!! I sure am grateful for my elders doing stuff like that with me when I was little.
