  • Years ago I took a class at Northwestern University Medical School right there on the lake in Evanston. I had a lot of fun while I was there and there didn't seem to be any shootings or murders that I can remember.

    Great bars and comedy clubs

    Historic numbers listed here.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crime_in_Chicago

Chicago ranked 21st in the nation in terms of murders per capita in 2012.
    http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2014/07/14/despite-recent-shootings-chicago-nowhere-near-u-s-murder-capital/
According to the FBI figures, Flint, Mich., had the highest murder rate of any sizeable U.S. city in 2012, the most recent year available. There were 62 murders per 100,000 population (which, coincidentally, was just about Flint’s estimated population that year). Trailing Flint were Detroit (54.6 murders per 100,000), New Orleans (53.2 per 100,000) and Jackson, Miss., (35.8 per 100,000). Chicago, whose population is several times bigger than any of those cities, came in 21st, with 18.5 murders per 100,000 — nearly quadruple the national average, true, but still nowhere near the highest in the country. (It’s worth noting that New Orleans didn’t report data in 2005, the year Hurricane Katrina struck.)

In fact, what’s striking is that from 1985 through 2012 only six cities have held the anti-honor of having the nation’s highest murder rate: New Orleans (12 times, most recently in 2011); Washington, D.C. (eight times, most recently in 1999); Detroit (four times, most recently 2006), Flint, Mich. (twice, also in 2010); Richmond, Va. (once, in 1997) and Birmingham, Ala. (once, in 2005).

From the Chicago Tribune – 2271 shootings so far this year within city limits (September 12th)

Chicago ABC 7 News -The Chicago Police Department released new crime numbers on the first six months of 2015. Murders and shootings are up, but there was a sharp drop in overall crime.
In June of 2015, there were 13 more homicides in Chicago than June of 2014. There were 20 more shootings and 24 more shooting victims in the same time period, police said

Chicago ABC 7 News - U.S. Attorney Zachary Fardon offered a sobering report on gangs and violent crime in Chicago. He said murders are up 20 percent in the city for the year.

I had one of the best weekends of my life in Chicago when the Dolphin's played at Soldier Field.

Hung out with Jim Mandich at the team hotel bar, had a thousand drinks and had side line passes for the game.

I need to find the pictures. I still have a game ball I grabbed off the sideline rack after the game.

My liver took quite a hit, as well as my nose and wallet but Rush Street in the mid 90's will do that.

We just got back from there today. First time in Chicago. It was actually pretty nice. Better than I thought it would be. People were nice and everything pretty clean. Hit a few of the usual tourist stops and had a good time. I watched the local news a couple of times and never heard about a shooting or murder. However while sitting in a restaurant the people behind us must have been a lawyer and a witness talking about some murder that happened and her upcoming deposition. I wouldn't care to live there but it was a pleasant trip.

Went to giordannos and Lou malnatis pizza. I've had giordannos in Orlando. I have always like their pizza. I think I actually liked Lou malnatis better though. Both are good to me though.

...a mere 49 critters shot and/or killed in the Bronx this last weekend.....

It appears that negroes like to shoot at..... kill/hit/miss a lot...... at each other than any other race in the USA.....

What has puzzled me is that "concerned critters" from these high violence neighborhoods are blaming caucasians for not doing enough to stop **** on **** violence in these areas...but when the brave NYPD street cops dust one of these felonious critter.....the "concerned critters" are the first one to cry bloo0dy murder that...."he was a good boy....and angel....a good loving son...etc ...and that the cops were evil for shooting him just because he was pointing a knife or gun at them...even though they asked him numerous times to drop his weapon"......

    Wow......

Agreed, it really is almost perfect this time of year. I had to go to a gymnastics meet to see my daughter saturday or I would have been on lake michigan with my buddy, they caught 50+ smallmouth over 2.5lbs, 5 over 5lbs. Also the salmon are always available but they are startiung to move shallow and can be caught from shore or in smaller boats. I love fall.

you are completely ignorant of what goes on up here. Been here 45 years and don't know anyone that has been robbed or murdered. The neighborhoods are segregated like Alabama in the 40s. You would never be anywhere near any of these neighborhoods if you came here on vacation.

I like Lou Malnatis more then Giordanos. Giordanos is very good but its average for up here. They put one up in my area and it failed, it just wasnt good enough.

All true. My girlfriend lived in the apartments on the south side of the river across from River Esplanade Park. We walked around down town at all times of the day and night and not only is it safe but the people that live downtown are very friendly.

Not really all that ignorant about it...been there several times and yes it is a nice city in certain areas with friendly people.....but what lies beneath in the majority of the city is a totally different story. Though I'd have to say I've had better luck with Salmon in the Green Bay area!

Never caught a salmon on purpose in Greenbay. Too Busy with the smallmouth and walleye. But I hate trolling. I know they catch salmon up there. Back when I did Salmon fish, the Detour area of the UP was the best, especially on years the pinks were biting. Fishing is great all around Lake Michigan from the Bay De Noc to New Buffalo, Petosky to Chicago. Chicago and Northwest Indiana are considered one of the top 10 smallmouth fisheries in the country(world), Might be top 5 now, its just getting ridiculous so many big fish.

The fact that you specifically mentioned vacation in your sarcastic post is the ignorance of which I speak. Anyone vacationing would have no reason to find "what lies beneath" da da dummmm. I've been here a long time and never see what lies beneath unless I choose too, and its more then a few wrong turns in almost all cases. And it doesnt lie beneath it lies to the side.

Aurelios is the same style as Lou Malnattis thin and I think its a better representation of the thin chicago style. But you have to go to the original restaurant in Homewood IL. The franchises are (can be)good, but they dont have that edge that brings them to be great like the original restaurant.

Come up during Taste of Chicago and have 20 tasters in the same day. Or try a few full size pieces. Taste of chicago is a fun time.

If the quoted post is not sarcastic then I misread it and made a mistake. Sorry about that. My feelings aren't hurt, I just like to defend Chicago because it gets swept up into same category as New York by alot of Floridians, and its very different.

Do you do more then salmon fish in the Green Bay area, you fish the fox? Up to the Menomonee? Anything Inland. I love fishing up there.

Fished the Racine before for the run, fun times. Lived in Chicago for a piece, never felt unsafe in the areas we frequented. It's exactly like any other city from that regard, know your areas and limits.
