Is it a good idea to have both as a single unit or purchase separately? Looking to buy both so i figured I would get the combo but I'd rather hear from people who have used them first before I throw money away.

I have the Standard Horizon HX851. It floats, has strobe, GPS and DSC distress calling. It does not have charting if that is what you are looking for.

Yea I'm thinking of getting one with chart plotting as well, just combining two technologies into one piece of equipment. Small boat.

Nobody makes a handheld VHF/chartplotter combo that I'm aware of.

But you could velcro a Garmin 78 to the back of a Horizon 290....

I started looking them up and kept seeing GPS/VHF combos but none were chartplotters. I guess when you call for help you can give them your GPS coordinates but can't put in coordinates to take you to the fish.
