"According to Waiopai Sport Fishing Charters, it is the biggest blue marlin caught in Kona in 25 years. They said it took two men over an hour to land the 14-and-and-half foot marlin on their 20-foot boat.

The group also said that judging by it's size, the fish was probably aged between 25 and 35 years. They added the angler was not sports fishing, nor was the fish caught for trophy, noting that marlin is a "very prized food fish in Hawaii" and this particularly fish will be eaten.

National Geographic says the blue marlin is not currently an endangered species and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Fish Watch reports that conservation of blue marlin, since it is a migratory species, is managed by both domestic and international organizations and says it is not overfished.
