1. We are dealing with the likelihood of some rare diagnoses here. The doctors are now waivering between two possible diagnoses for Drew's chronic lung condition. One is called sarcoidosis (extremely rare for children). The other is a very rare allergic reaction to methotrexate (a drug in Drew's leukemia treatment plan). Barring future definitive lab test results, the doctors are now heavily leaning towards this condition coming as a result of methotrexate. This would be great news! Its anticipated that Drew's lung condition would improve and stay healthy now that methotrexate has been discontinued. If this happens, Drew's lung problem would likely never come back! Though Drew's doctors confess they've never seen a child with this kind of pulmonary reaction to methotrexate, it has been documented in rare cases seen back in the 1960s. Although I would refrain from congratulating Drew on achieving medical history until he snaps out of his post-sedative haze. The boy's eyes are open but his mind is still floating in the sky somewhere.
2. In addition to the chronic lung condition, Drew is still dealing with an acute infection. And now the lab tests are starting to provide usuful information for us. Today, labs showed Drew's lungs are fighting a yeast strain called cryptococcus in addition to PCP pneumonia which was discovered earlier today. Both are being treated with meds that Drew has been on this past week.
3. Today is also the day that Drew officially came off Bipap. They also removed his catheter and took out his A-line.
Mandi and I are simply overwhelmed with gratitude to each of you that have taken time to pray for Drew and extend a hand of comfort to our family. You have taught me what it means to bear one another's burdens. I'm forever grateful to God for his people.
This is a picture of one of the ICU physicians who exhausted much of his mental and physical energy to help bring Drew back to health. We love this man!
