Recreational Harvest of Snowy Grouper in South Atlantic Waters Will Close on July 6, 2015

Recreational harvest of snowy grouper in the South Atlantic will close at 12:01 a.m. (local time), July 6, 2015. Recreational harvest will reopen at 12:01 a.m. (local time) on January 1, 2016. The 2015 recreational annual catch limit is 523 fish. The 2015 fishing season must be shortened if the average 2012-2014 recreational landings exceed the annual catch limit. Reports indicate the average 2012-2014 landings exceeded the annual catch limit; therefore, the recreational harvest of snowy grouper will close July 6, 2015.

During the closure:
• Recreational harvest or possession of snowy grouper is prohibited.
The closure applies in both state and federal waters for vessels with a valid charter/headboat permit for South Atlantic Snapper-Grouper.
• Commercial harvest of snowy grouper for the 2015 fishing season closed on June 30, 2015; therefore, harvest or possession of snowy grouper in or from federal waters is closed.
• Sale and purchase of snowy grouper in or from federal waters is prohibited.
This closure is necessary to protect the snapper-grouper resource.

For you Keys charter guys, remember its closed in both State and Fed waters if you have a Charter Headboat Permit.

BTW, is 523 fish a joke or what? Just who are these people at SAFMC? 1 tile per boat and only 523 total Snowies from the entire SAFMC area?

Off Port Canaveral the last few years we have been starting to catch them of High Speed Vertical jigs
while AJ fishing in 200 to 300 foot waters......a hundred foot off the bottom. Kind of like the Red
Snappers we are seeing feeding near the surface along weedlines. A good sign of abundance but
none of that matters in an anti fishing policy oriented federal management system.

What a joke! 523! What mathematical genius came up with that number. If they average 30 lbs each, and most do not, they are allowing 15000 lbs plus or minus to be harvested annually by Rec. anglers. In the ENTIRE south Atlantic. This is worse than a joke. Just another example of FUBAR resource management.

When you make stupid rules they may well drive the populace to non compliance.
Had to let a huge Blue Line Tile go due to that closure, vented him twice and he still didn't go back down.
Been venting Snowies all season when I get 2 on at once, again not one has gone back down.
How in the world we have gone from 5 per license, to 1 per license, to 1 per boat to none is mind boggling.
