Buy a well balanced food from a company that actually has food experience. Blue Buffalo was put together by a marketing guy to dupe folks. Your dog may be better, but what were you feeding before? Purina Pro Plan, Science Diet are good bets.

When Innova became hard to find locally, I switched my dogs to Taste of the Wild Wetlands or High Prairie formula (affiliated with Diamond, but made at a different plant with higher control). One of my shiba inus developed a rash, so I weaned them to Evo Red Meat formula (also by Innova). Both are grain free with potato and or peas as the carb.

Duckman, maybe so. I went to the poisoned pets website and if true, I am shocked. The article on rendering meat and its use in pet food is unbelievable. What's more disturbing is that it says ALL pet food with meat is put through this process.

Btw, my kid does not eat fast food but maybe, maybe one per month. Me on the other hand... well I'm going to die soon anyway.

Couple years ago, I inherited a Schipperke (looks like a mini black chow) from my great uncle. She grew up in Germany on a houseboat of sorts with Zodiac for daily transport. She eats what I eat except for dairy products, onions and stuff with too much garlic. Never bought dog food. I eat healthy with a lot of grains, protein and veggies. She seems happy and **** inquisitive and smart. Oh she loves fishing and boats. :grin

Why not just people food? Do people buy dog food to save money?

Hey, Johnny-

Thanks for the info. We just disagree, but that is what the forum is all about. I personally have no problem with an appropriate mix of grains in animal food. Purina has been at this a long time and has an established reputation supported by a vets and nutritionist both on staff and in the field. (I am not a Purina rep or salesman.)

My point is if your dog likes its food, has a healthy weight, coat, and energy, go for it. Just watch the marketing hype.

Purina Dog Chow - green bag. Dogs are healthy - no problems - never been to vet - never been sick. One is 9.5 years and the other is 7. Get leftover food and bones, and rawhide chews. Plus whatever dead animals they eat.

I feed, beef, chicken, venison, pork, Lamb, Goat, Turkey, Rabbit, duck, saltwater fish, quail, etc.

^^ this is what my cur dog is fed as well. If my 2 wiener dogs would eat raw I would feed it to them as well. I have them on Earthborn Holistic, and it is by far the best dry food I have ever had a dog on

I used to give my Labs fish oil ( vitamin grade )....lots of water work ( hunting dogs ) gave them dry skin...the oil was like magic for that.

If I ever get another dog....I will keep your diet in mind. Do you need to add any ruffage?
