I fished the KDW Classic this weekend with the regular team, Jeff ,Kevin and his 8yr old son Gavin who would be our Junior angler for the day. We left out of Boynton Inlet ( by the way, love the new rules of fishing out of three inlets the last two years) , the plan was the same as last year , pick up some live bait , head out of inlet and at 7am drop the deep lines and troll for Wahoo. The seas were much better than I expected , unfortunately the scattered weeds made it difficult to troll productively , stopping every 15min to clean lines. After about two hours we went to our second phase, heading off shore for Dolphin, we got out to about 1000ft and saw a few nice 20# dolphin jump in front of the boat , we quickly tried to get a spread out but were not prepared quick enough and missed the opportunity as we trolled around the area for 30 min with not a knock down. We continued to run further out and in about 1,400 ft I noticed a single bird diving in front of the boat, I yelled out bird diving and deploy baits which this time was ready to go , as we passed the bird one rod goes off and then another one, we see a dolphin jump a 100ft back with a huge splash, we new this was a placing fish , so we brought other lines in and cleared the area. Apparently this fish was so aggressive it came across and hit two baits within seconds and we had two rods hooked into the same fish. Not knowing which one had the better hook up as both rods peeled line equally , we took our time and reeled him in simultaneously, he made another run as we got him close and then as we got him finally boat side Jeff sunk a gaff in him and pulled him in:grin After about 50 high fives we figured with almost 2 1/2 hrs left until check in, we went to phase 3 and finished the day in front of the Breakers soaking some gogs in hopes for a nice king or even a wahoo. The first drift Jeff's rod goes off and it peeling line , we knew it was a nice size king, then the next rod went off and we handed it to Gavin in hopes that he would have something to weigh in. Jeff Fish weighed in at 23.5 lbs which held on to 10th place almost all the way until 4pm but another one came in and knocked him out. Gavin's 16.3 lb King got him 6th Place which he hung on too and My 29.6 Lb Bull held 3rd Place Dolphin for a sweet $1000 check, the icing on the cake was I won my entry calling in on the Saturday fishing headquarters radio show, Thanks again Pete!
Always love this tournament , with so many ways to win it really has the best odds that I have seen in a tournament even at 230 something boats entering and always great to see and meet the guys on this forum at these events.
