Line Counter Trolling Reels??

We recently had the chance to do some chartered striper fishing on Lake Texoma. The 4 of us were given rigs with the line counter reels and the captain had us each let line out to a different distance to see what depth was working best. After someone hooked up a couple of times at the same distance he had us all use that distance and we all started catching fish.
Now I'm thinking about trying one for trolling here both nearshore and around the river bridges.
I don't want to spend a ton of $$ but don't want a POS either.
Any inputs are appreciated.

keep your current gear and buy a hand held line counter.

I gotta ask why you guys recommend an attachment rather than a reel with a built in counter?
    Cost? Reliability? Other?

I bought a cheap < $20 line counter at Gander Mountain couple of years ago. Has worked fine.
