I go to the local community college dental hygienist lab and volunteer to be a lab rat for them.
I have to pay a $10 fee, but that's it. I get Novocain, a full scraping and the ultra sonic cleaning as well. (ultra sonic is the water thingy, the water is to cool the tool, your tooth and help wash away the plaque being removed)
The people who do the cleaning are students, not hygienists yet, but their instructor and a dentist are there at all times, wandering around, watching what is going on, consulting the student and patient.

Check out your local colleges that have a dental program, they need lab rats. I've probably gotten 20 families involved over the last 5 years I have been getting my cleanings this way.

I used an ultrasonic thing to clean coral cores. It was the size of a baseball bat

One last piece of advise, buy yourself a shower pick.

(there are cheaper models than this one) I just googled an example.

Same as UF, but no $10. At $404, the Scaling and Root planning part is $274. Seems to depend on how many teeth are involved.

****, I shouldn't have read this thread. I haven't been to a dentist in 7 years and am dreading the process of finding a new one in my area who won't rip me off or savagely [and unnecessarily] attack my gums.

I can't believe the number of people here who haven't been to the dentist in years. I truly believe the adage an ounce of prevention being worth a pound of cure. No wonder people are afraid of the dentist, they don't go until they have a problem then complain about the pain an cost.

Parker I am as guilty as the OP. Knock on wood, floss and brush and unless you have enamel deficiency, screw all that. I used to have dental instruments I would use on my own teeth, I still want to beat the crap out of my girl friend for throwing them away. :mad

Me either. Taking care of your teeth is important if you plan on keeping them in the later years of your life.

Anybody that doesn't go to the dentist for more than a year deserves to get overcharged.
That's like coming on here and posting that you don't bother with wiping your ***.

That may be in many cases, but my teeth are no worse off than they were the last visit 20 years ago. I am getting them whitened and plan to go for a cleaning regularly.

After reading the article posted here paradontal disease is when you have pockets exceeding 4 mm. She said I had areas of 4 to 5. Dentist never mentioned I had a problem. Glad I got it done though. Brushing and floss isin't going to do much below the gums.

We all live in our mouths health wise. Had mine done and a new crown . Also treatment for deep pockets . Total of about 3 hours in the chair. Cost was 500 as insurance picked up about 300 so your about in line. Dentist has a new "toy" and makes crowns in his office and they fit perfectly when hes done. No sending out molds and waiting a week.
